I was meeting with realtors at the rooming house today and while there, spoke with the first floor tenants. During Christmas, they cooked up dinner for everyone in the building and it turns out they've decided to continue doing this every Sunday. The tenants have set up a potluck dinner situation where everyone contributes food and the two ladies downstairs cook the food for everyone. They either come downstairs to eat or just grab a plate and take it back to their room. The tenants have created an old school boarding house for themselves where meals are served.

It will give them a sense of belonging to something and hopefully lead to longer term residents. At one point I was having problems in one of my rooming houses with police showing up regularly so I did something where if the cops didn't show up for a couple weeks I bought them pizza and soda for everyone, maybe you could contribute a turkey or something like that for the ladies to cook, especially if it will get listed soon, tell them you appreciate there cooperation with showings --72.231.xxx.xxx

They have set their place up nice for dinners replete with Sternos and a table setup. I was very pleasantly surprised and it makes me want to step up my game to improve the place. I developed some information today that's making reconsider selling. I'll post in a separate string. If I decide to sell, it will probably be gone in less than a month, but I think I'm going to hit the pause button for now. --172.56.xx.xxx

It's a nice thing to see but the two ladies are doing every thing to make it work. Sterno not good. Can tip over and flash. You can contribute a couple of Salton Hot Trays if those are still made. --73.248.xxx.xxx

Back when I waitressed at the country club, we used sternos with chafing dishes. The biggest problem was making sure the chafing dishes kept sufficient water. But they were usually squat-shaped enough that tipping wasn't an issue-- although, granted, there were little recesses to set them into under the reservoir. If they were sitting them on top of bowls turned upside-down or something--- yeah, that would be a danger.

Gkarl, I was hoping you would keep it-- for entirely selfish reasons. :) I think I'm not the only one who lives vicariously through what you and DJ and the other rooming house operators get to do, and I enjoy everyone's stories. :) --96.46.xxx.xx

Deanna:

I think I may wait. As I mentioned in the other string, I'm only considering selling to raise money for a new project but until I have plans finalized and approved for that project, I won't know what my actual costs of development will be. I'm leaning towards waiting until I get to that point before deciding as it may very well be that it might cost less than I think it will. I'm just thinking I need to wait and get more information. I guess my fear is a change in market conditions where I can't sell quickly. However, from information that I found out today, those conditions likely won't change for quite some time. There is literally no inventory of MFH's in my area--what little that's there is defective and no one wants it. --209.122.xx.xxx

We had a group women living in our huts for years. They took turns cooking for everyone. Sometimes they ate together, sometimes they just got a plate and went home, but it worked for them. I was always seeing pictures of food on FB! --50.82.xxx.xx

Neat story! Reminds me of back in college when the 6 folks who lived in our church's campus house would get together for once-a-week supper meal. Usually on the weekends. Everyone took a turn cooking, and we quickly found out who was a chef (and who wasn't)! Had some delicious and sometimes "interesting" dishes.

I'm glad to hear you're keeping it for now. I too enjoy the latest episode of "As the Rooming House Turns!" --173.20.xxx.xxx

That's awesome! They will probably stick around for a long time because of the feeling of community. Do you not make more money as a rooming house than other rentals. --73.120.xx.xxx

Refers to people not wanting a rooming house in their neighborhood. I think rooming houses are a great idea. I wish it wasn’t nearly impossible to have one in Massachusetts. With the cost of traditional apartments here they would be a gold mine. --24.147.xx.xxx

G,

Nice!

I have a good friend who livesIn a large room in a house with 18 other people. It’s big. It has multiple shared kitchens.

He really enjoys that many of the young people work at local restaurants and either bring some tasty morsels home to share or they are chefs who can cook up tasty morsels! Much better than Ramen noodles :-)
