Has anyone had any luck reglazing? I have a porcelain tub and a fiberglass shower that I could save $ by reglazing. I tried reglazing 15 yrs ago but was disappointed quickly. Has the technology gotten any better? --97.71.xx.xxx |

Hi Nellie. We just had a tub reglazed yesterday, Friday. He will be coming back Monday to caulk the tub and remove the paper and tape.
We selected a company that did a tub for us in 1990 that still looks mint. Since then this company told me the technology has gotten even better. My husband who was there said the tub looked great when he finished.
How the job holds up has alot to do with how the tenant takes care of it. I provide the instructions from the glazing provider to the tenant who gets a refinished tub. You are not to use a suction mat on the tub as the suction could damage the tub bottom. During one of my regular inspections I noted a suction mat on the tub bottom and I had specifically highlighted and pointed it out at move in orientation. When I saw the suction mat I carefully removed it and admonished the tenant. Fortunately I caught it in time and that is the tub that lasted and still looks mint.
Research the companies in your area, read all the reviews and make sure they've been in business for a long time. Then ask them how the technology has changed since 15 years ago. Best of luck in finding the right source for your tub and shower!

Yes, I've done a couple. This is one thing to not DIY.
Get a good pro, like Oreo --72.218.xx.xxx |

Clarification: Good on a steel or cast iron tub.
I don't know if it would work well on fiberglass - since it flexes, I would be wary --72.218.xx.xxx |

Hired a guy to come in and spray one. He sanded it all down, cleaned it well with alcohol, taped it off and sprayed it.
This is a fiberglass tub/surround.
Moved people in and within a couple months it started to peel.
Not reglazing per se, but what I have dealt with.
I have used the can spray for a couple iron tubs and had bad results.
For me if one is that bad I will replace it and start the clock over. Each time I tried to cut corners it shows.
Then again, I did not have a true glazing company do the work either, so Oreo is spot on. --47.227.xx.xxx |

Most Re-glazing is simply a "Paint" product sprayed over the tub/shower. It will not Last! The better options are to replace them or in stall a firber glass skin over the old tub.

Thanks everyone! You’ve given me hope that it might be possible. I’ll start researching locally now! --97.71.xx.xxx |

The real multi step process to reglaze is as much as a new tub. --162.204.xxx.xxx |

Save your money replace. I’ve reglazed two units and they both failed. --99.23.xxx.x |

Re-glazing company AND a "bath outfitters" type company both told me going over fiberglass doesn't work long-term.
We have one tub that was obviously re-glazed and it fails every couple of years. This house remains occupied so we haven't attempted anything else yet, but one day we will just replace it with a shower. --73.216.xxx.xxx |

We chose to reglaze not replace as we dont plan to rent the unit out. For us, reglaze is faster, less mess and heavy removalinstall on a 2nd floor is a no go. We've had a long run and still going strong with the 4 we had done more than 20 years ago. --209.107.xxx.xxx |
