I’m having to completely remodel after tenant left house NASTY so funds are limited. Has anyone used Mr Cool DIY HVAC system? SFH 2/1 class C so I’d only need 4 “zones” or cassettes. Got a bid yesterday for a $19k complete traditional system but it’s just not in my budget. FWIW, I’m in Ca Hot Central Valley. Thanks for any input! --97.71.xx.xxx |

It looked great online in their ads, but in reading the reviews, it was not found to cool at all, so I abandoned the idea. Would love to hear feedback from anyone who tried it. --216.131.xx.xxx |

Nellie, in trying to locate the ad I saw the Mr. Cool system I mentioned in my previous post, there were a few systems Mr Cool sells. The ad I saw was a DIY system, but may not be the one you are asking about. The one I saw you basically just hung it on a wall. There was no connection outside the building. --216.131.xx.xxx |

When I searched for it, it came up as a mini-split.
There are many good brands of mini-split systems & they are truly DIY, if you are just a bit handy. I did have my HVAC pro come & vacuum & charge the lines as the final step of the hookup.
They are super energy efficient. It will help to shade the exterior unit.
Consider: depending on the square footage & floorpan, you may be able to use fewer, larger units & circulate the air indoors - with open doors between rooms & a fan or 2 --72.218.xx.xxx |

I have lots of class C places. Class C places get window units. These can be bought new for a couple hundred at Wal-Mart or many hardware stores. Used you can get them for as little as $50, which is what I do. It might take 2 or 3 units to do the job as they come in different levels (small, one room units to larger units that can cool the main part of the place). I have the handyman put these in for summer or pull them for the winter as tenants usually mess up the install or take out). If you want to save even more, have the tenant buy their own. Explain it to them like this: "You can get one you want, large or small, used or new as you like. It will save you money in several ways, among them is that I won't have to charge higher rent because I had to spend a small fortune to get a large system, plus, you only have to run them in the rooms you are in, not the entire house, saving you money."
Also, if you're in the hot central valley, you might have a better situation using a swamp cooler system. These have a pan with water on the bottom and a motor that pulls outside air through pads that are soaked with water and blows this cool air through ducts into the house. They are quite effective and not expensive. They sell them at Home Depot and other stores. --174.84.xxx.xx |

I've been in HVAC for 45 years.
Mini splits in general pros and cons:
Pros:
high efficiency
Quiet
easy to install
no ductwork required
Can be installed DIY
Cons:
Must have an open floor plan or a cassette for every room
very complex system (VF drive and multiple heads) so subject to more frequent and more expensive repairs
Only one year warranty
Nobody stocks replacement parts.
Typical failure requires replacement or waiting up to a couple of months for replacement parts.
Not as robust as typical split systems.
I have installed around 50. Some work years with no problems at all. Some fail within the first year. I have found the failure rate to be higher than typical split systems.
