Asbestos encapsulant (by Lauren IN [IN]) Posted on: Sep 8, 2026 6:09 PM

I have some ductwork that has asbestos tape on the joints (not deteriorating). Does anyone have recommendations on how to encapsulate? So far I've found Lag Kote II (pricy), but wanted to know if there's anything else? Can I use the silver duct tape to cover it instead? I'm looking for something simple (not tearing out ducts) as it is occupied.I've found conflicting things on the internet about using Kilz, Zinsser oil-based paint, and the silver duct tape. Don't want to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Also, are there any kind of guidelines to follow for doing this? Just having trouble researching on the internet with all the conflicting info.

I also have this in my own home. Spoke to three different companies and their only solution was to paint it. That's not what I envisioned as a solution. I wanted a product like a tube that was split down the long side and wrapped around the pipe. The product is put there but no one is using it? I was told to spray it down with water yearly. But 8 years later I've not ever done that. We have no issues with it. Other people seem to dog the entire house cause of this visual. Anyways I never hired any company and one day I'll get back to it. Following your post. --172.56.xx.xxx

I was thinking something like RedGuard or Aqua Defense, but they’d both stick out like a sore thumb. --143.105.x.xxx

I wouldnt do anything while it is occupied unless you can lock yourself down there and noone knows what you are doing.wait till it is vacant then remove it or wrap in duct tape and when asked that is how it was when you bought it --98.98.xx.xx

I think NE's flex seal would work well for encapsulation.

I had some electric drop from the exterior meter to the interior breaker box where the UV had cracked the outside plastic. The allowed water to get in and then drained to the breaker. I sealed that wire up with flex seal and was impressed with how well that stuff stuck. --204.111.xxx.xxx

I do as NE does, then go over any residue with silver foil duct tape.

It's a lot of piping. I'd rather an extra extra large swim noodle cut lenthways just to give you a Picture. They make such with a foil covering and soft interior insulation. And the seams are taped. Every once in a while I go down that rabbit hole. --172.56.xx.xxx

Perhaps wrap insulation around the ductwork (like Frost King 12 in. x 15 ft. Foil and Fiberglass Duct Insulation @ H Depot for $19.32).

That will not only cover the joints, but also add insulation - which is generally a good thing around ductwork. Secure it with aluminum duct tape. --72.218.xx.xxx

Laws change. What might work now might not be acceptable in the future. If it is accessible, I would simply remove it and not have to worry about any changes in requirements in the future. --76.178.xxx.xxx

We wrapped the asbestos with large heavy duty plastic sheets with duct tape every 15" or so. Safe for now; if you wanted to remove it at a later date you could.

Do you need a new furnace? When we purchased a place with asbestos in the basement, after they finished and left we noticed the asbestos was gone! --216.131.xx.xxx

Lauren,

The dust during removal is DANGEROUS!

Seriously consider hiring removal so it's not an issue down the road or when you sell.

At MY home it's painted with latex paint.

I agree with Ken - don't alert the resident to it's presence.

I would be VERY careful with asbestos tape on ducts. If it's just a few small areas, then you can wrap it with duct tape, but I'd definitely wear a respirator and apply a negative pressure to the house by using powerful fans in the windows facing outdoors...or if it's in a crawlspace that's not an issue. Carefully clean the metal part of the ducts adjacent to it so that the tape sticks really well and use "duct" tape...not "duck" tape. In other words, buy a very high quality tape made for heating ducts...the cheap stuff with a picture of a duck on it will come off as the ducts heat up and cool down over time...don't buy it from the dollar store!

If you want a higher quality product or you have a lot to do, I'd look at Fiberlock Wet Wrap and Seal.

Don't take risks with asbestos.

Ken...just take it off and lie about "it was that way when I bought it"...really? Wow. --64.38.xxx.xxx
