I am picking up a place with two separate doors with touch key locks from Schlage. What are other peoples experience with them? They look nice but do they stand up to tenant wear and tear? How often do you have to change the batteries and what type do they take?

I am not sure if I should remove them and replace with my standard landlord locks.

We went from Schlage to Defiant due to qualify issues a few years back. We usually change the batteries once a year whether they need it or not...usually during our annual smoke detector inspection first Saturday of November.

I've found the Schlage newer keypad locks to be unreliable with batteries dying without notice. Not so much Defiant.

Oh and found out about the Defiant keypad locks on Lumberjack Landlord. They have survived and been tested in the brutal weather of the frozen NE, namely, NH.

It depends if you are talking about WiFi enabled ones or not. I have a Schlage push button lock on my personal residence. It's not WiFi capable. I've had it for years. Uses a single 9 volt battery that lasts at least a couple of years. It will flash repeatedly when you use it to let you know the battery is low. You can still use a key if the battery were to ever die.

WiFi enabled ones are different. They have to keep communicating with your router and usually have much shorter battery life. Plus the internet needs to be working and power must be on. Too many things to go wrong.

I wouldn't hesitate to install a non WiFi one on a rental. If that's what you have in place I would leave it. Zero tenant lockouts.

WE have two rentals and our personal house with Schlage keypad locks. Never an issue. Ours have a smooth glass touch surface and are NOT wifi enabled. The batteries last well over a year. I change them annually and have never had one die.

For our two rentals we have the key to this lock in a permanently mounted lock box in a discreet location. There are other doors to the house that require keys and take a different key.

Interesting about Defiant locks. I have always considered them to be Kwikset clones and a little on the lower end. I picked some up for cheap and put them in my kids house when she sold it. Tougher to rekey as well.

What GKarl said. The Wi-Fi lock still work if the wi-fi/power goes out.

I initially noticed the Defiant brand when I had a locksmith who was outrageously priced and used he used Defiant.
