CD or T-Bill? (by GKARL [PA]) Posted on: Jul 12, 2026 1:11 PM Message:
I have a CD coming due later this month. The bank I have it with is offering a 7 month fixed 3.75%. A 4 week T-bill is paying 3.69% and if you stretch the maturity a bit and go with an 8 week bill, you get 3.72%. T-bill rates are free of state taxes so your after tax yield is more, your money isn't tied up for 7 months and they're actually safer than FDIC. If rates are going to be higher for longer, I'm thinking boring T-bills make a lot of sense for near term cash parking. What are you doing with idle cash?

I'm staying with very short term T bills. I'm trying to figure out what the FED is thinking under new leadership.

I believe he made it rather clear that inflation was his primary concern. In the short term that might mean some small increases over the next year or two. I really don't see much reason to believe that they are going to spike upwards.
I would consider the T-Bills, but I don't believe the older Legacy system can be used to buy the T-Bills. --50.96.xx.xxx |

I've been getting T-Bills on Treasury Direct. There's also a couple of 0 to 90 day ETFs for them. I've been working with VBIL. --172.56.xxx.xxx |

check out money market accounts and other accounts at local banks, I'm getting very good interest rates in such bank accounts and I'm totally liquid. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

I’m in a high tax state so it’s not even a contest between the two. The TBills are far superior. I would choose them anyway as it is easier and you can choose whether or not you want to roll them over again and how many times.
I have purchased them in ladders in the past but it was too cumbersome so I just switched to ETFs.
I use a floating rate tbill etf and a 3 month Tbill etf as my cash account.
It would also be more fair to compare a 26week rate since the terms are similar. --162.204.xxx.xxx |

I'm not a proponent of purchasing from the government as an investment. There was the opportunity to buy savings bonds at 9% (?) some few years back. There was a limit to the amount you could buy, connected to purchasing it having something to do with your Federal taxes. I purchased $5000 worth and the IRS messed it up. So for me, CD's are my choice. One of our local credit unions has a 12 month CD at 4%. Have you checked Credit Union rates in your area?
We like to follow Clear Value Tax on u tube for economic news. He sometimes shows charts of where interest rates are going, based on percentages. He has a 10 minhute video almost daily.
