ESA & Depression (by Mark Gill [NY]) Posted on: Jun 10, 2026 2:08 AM
Message:

I’ve been dealing with depression for quite some time, and it has started affecting my ability to maintain a normal routine. Some days feel manageable, but on others even basic tasks like getting out of bed, working, or interacting with people feel overwhelming.

Recently, I came across Emotional Support Animals and the idea that they may provide comfort and stability for people struggling with mental health conditions. I was also looking into ESA documentation and found services like My ESA Therapist, where licensed professionals evaluate whether someone qualifies for an ESA letter based on their condition.

Before I move forward, I want to understand how helpful an ESA letter actually is in real-life situations. Does having a valid ESA letter make it easier to request housing accommodations under the Fair Housing Act for someone dealing with depression? And how does the process usually work when submitting it to a landlord?

I’d appreciate any advice or experiences from others who have gone through something similar. --185.187.xxx.xxx

I find filling my days with my 3 jobs and lots of physical work completely blows any depression tendencies out of the water. 65 yr old female. Keep busy and active.

Pets provide solace for pretty much everyone but I wouldn't force an ESA on a "no pets" abode. --72.0.xxx.xx

Ya'll know this is just spam for "My ESA Therapist", don't you? Since their days are numbered, they must be trying to drum up business before tenants find out ESAs aren't a thing anymore. --128.77.xx.xxx

Pretty sure that HUD released an addendum to their animals category. (Look it up to be sure)

Service animals must be trained for a specific task or tasks.

ESAs are no longer protected.

My opinion is that if you feel the need for an animal make sure it is allowed where you reside. Then contact the landlord about it and see if they charge for animals. I know that I do.

Most importantly, again in my opinion, if you feel that you are suffering seek the help of a professional. Do not go to some ESAs-R-Us place in hopes that you will get one over on the landlord.

I have family that suffers from depression. One is on medication for it. They both went to therapists. One has moved on from that, having gotten control of the situation and now manages quite well.

Both own animals and neither tried getting an ESA letter for them.

Also this is not the right place for you to be asking for help. Seek a professional. --47.227.xx.xxx

That is in the future. I am talking about right now.

We need to get the fake ESA crowd shut down. Even if it means only for a few years. Maybe we can train people to not push the fake agenda, thus making it tougher to get back to the level they had been at.

My opinion is that Newsom will not be elected. I hope that I am right on this. But I have been wrong before. --47.227.xx.xxx

Jason nailed it.

Fishing on a landlord site.

But, for anyone actually wondering....... an online letter is worthless.

Go see a real, local psychologist and get a prescription.

There are many medications that can help immensly.

Benn there, done that, doing better --72.218.xx.xxx

The thing behind ESA animals is that they're able to provide an external focus to distract from whatever problems are being problematic. They're not a cure.

Healthy family relationships, hobbies, volunteer work, church activity, etc-- all those things are able to provide the same external focus that an ESA does. The difference is that human:human relationships tend to be more messy than human:animal relationships, because humans generally don't put up with acting like NPC's in other people's lives.

If your depression is due to a brain chemistry issue, get a prescription for genuine medication. It will make a huge difference.

If your depression is due to past trauma, get therapy. A good therapist will help you process through your issues. If the therapist is a bad match for you-- move on and find a better one.

Pair therapy and/or medication with deliberately cultivating outside relationships. It might be volunteering at a food pantry or a soup kitchen or a shelter. Find people who are even more rock-bottom than you feel, and do something to improve their lives. Helping others helps you with your own self-growth.

I'd try those three strategies before it even occurred to me to rely on an ESA. --137.118.xx.xxx

An emotional support animal might help or it might not, but HUD has just removed the legal protection for ESAs. Landlords no longer have to accept them.

So, if you think an ESA would help you, find a rental that allows pets and pay the pet fees and live there. --76.178.xxx.xxx

I have found that other humans are the main cause of depression.

I have however also found that a few humans can help you overcome it or at least reduce it. I don't mean therapist either.

Taking medications for depression is risky business. All medications have side effects. Depression medications can have serious side effects.

Just a personal thought on the matter, I believe humans mainly get depression by how they are treated and by how they think others see them. Stay away from those who treat you poorly and don't concern yourself with the other and your depression will lesson.

Listen to some Buddhist principles and that will help too. Not saying you should become a Buddhist, but their principle for dealing with life I find to be wise.

ESA & Anxiety (by Terry B. Grigg [NY]) Posted on: May 27, 2026 1:27 AM

Over the past few months, stress and anxiety have been affecting my sleep, focus, and overall mood more than usual. I have been reading about Emotional Support Animals and how they may help people feel calmer and more emotionally stable during difficult times.

While researching online, I found My ESA Therapist and started wondering how many people here have actually gone through the ESA process. Did having an emotional support animal make a noticeable difference in your mental health or daily routine? I am also curious about how smooth and professional the online evaluation experience was for you.

Would love to hear real experiences, advice, or things people wish they knew before starting the process. --152.56.xx.xxx --73.19.xxx.xx
