I posted an ad on FB today and before finalizing, they required my driver's license before ad approval. It's been a minute since I used FB, so I'm not sure when they started this. That's possibly a good thing as it could reduce the number of fraudulent ads. A quick look at the ads and I saw only one that looked suspect. A few months back, every other ad was suspect.

Two days after my daughter sold her house it went up for rent at well under the mortgage price.
Turns out it was a scammer in (AZ I think) that did it.
I do not use FB because of all the trash that lurks there in my area. I am curious how putting a DL up works with their system tho.
Does FB verify that the DL is legit? Maybe this is a slow down for the scammers, but if they can take over someone's account they surely can create a fake DL.

I think too myself about how scammers operate. Is it just me, or are they robbing change in the ashtray and leaving the gold bars?
They will try to highjack your listing by stealing/reusing pictures to get application money and or small holding deposits. Why are they not going after the deeds instead? In my case, it is equity stripping that make places look encumbered. I am just thinking though - these folks are missing the boat if you are going to steal, go for the deed. --173.188.xx.xx |

Another vote for, "It's the difference between a Class C Misdemeanor and a felony if you get caught."
Theft under $100 is punishable by a $500 fine in Texas. No jail time, but it goes on your criminal record. But for the most part, no one's going to track you down. They want to get in, get a little money, get out. They make it up in volume. If they steal the photos to 1,000 places, repost them with altered contact information, and half of them generate interest, and a quarter of those actually give them $35-$70 in application fees--- that's about $5-$9k.
But if you steal the deed to a house, that's automatically Real Property Theft. If the house is worth less than $30k, you're looking at a state jail felony for 180 days-2 years. $30k-$150k is a 3rd degree felony, which gets you 2-10 years in prison. $150-$300k is a 2nd degree felony, which is 2-20 years in prison. And $300k+ is 1st degree felony, which is 5-99 years or life in prison.
Scammer Fred is going to want to bilk random people out of money they'll get upset about losing, but probably won't sink the resources into tracking him down for justice. It takes a totally different mentality to put decades of your life on the line by stealing a house, getting banks and mortgages and courthouse county clerks and notaries and insurance and title companies involved, for a house that you hope you can perhaps flip before someone connects the dots. --96.46.xxx.xxx |

The person who stole my ad on FB last year ripped off someone for rent and security. I complained mightily to FB to no avail. I'm thinking folks just stopped advertising which may have forced a change in policy. A year ago, about every other ad was fraudulent. You could tell from the pictures and extremely low prices. The scammers literally broke FB marketplace. They had to do something. --23.28.x.xxx |
