If you can't tax people on the unrealized gains from stocks then why do property taxes keep going up on the unrealized value of a house? --76.35.xxx.xxx |

It’s not taxed on unrealized value. It’s taxed on assessed value based on comparative market. Not that I agree with it at all though. My property taxes shouldn’t have to pay to educate tenants kids who skip out on rent, especially when mine are home schooled and don’t use the school portion of the tax. --24.152.xxx.xx |

I agree with NE, property taxes fund the town,if assessments werent kept fair then you would receive a benefit to keep the property longer than anyone else and new purchases would hurt more. i dont believe in property or income tax, i think there should be a consumption tax to cover both, not to mention if 60% of govt spending were eliminated we would be just fine.you want to fuel the economy? get rid of 60% of govt spending and let people keep more of there own money --38.248.xx.xxx |

Because they can. They get in office and decide how much of what you make that they want (the answer is always more). Then they make rules you have little or no input on and they make you obey or they take your house and/or put you in jail.
If you decide to run against them and have a chance of winning, they cheat. If, somehow, you do win, they try to compromise you or try to bribe you or threaten you to do what they want.
They play the long game too. If they want something, like to take certain things from you, and they are prevented from that, they come right back and try it from a different angle or change the words a little. If they can't get it all, they take it an inch at a time. I see it over and over.
Here's an example just a few weeks ago right here. The school tax here is set at 18 mills. This produced a certain amount of money. Then they reassessed all the housing, up of course. The amount for the school then equalled only about 15 mills. So they held vote, requesting that the millage be raised back to 19 mills. This school district got by with the dollar amount before buy now they cried "it's for the kids". The vote in the county defeated this grab. So they decided to let people from out of the county whose kids went to school in the county vote on this. And, guess what, all these extra votes changed the result to yes. So now, everyone in the county will pay higher tax for school when they had enough money before but those out of the county do not pay more. The extra money(hundreds of thousands) generated by this, they have not told anyone where it will be spent. I predict salary raises, bonus money, a boost in retirement packages. And on it goes. You vote no and they find a way to change the result. --24.180.xx.xxx |

Ran across that earlier today on FB. :)
Pretty much zero fans of out-of-control property taxes there, too. --96.46.xxx.xxx |

This is why CA has Proposition 13 - no assessments typically - tax is based on the actual cash sale price. see www dot hjta dot org for more details --98.97.xx.xx |

Rick Russell, be careful as the next people in charge might start doing just that.
I agree that a consumption tax would be better. Not sure how it would work with so many people living off the government.
Just dropping property taxes would create too big of a hole, at least in Indiana. Something has to be worked up to take its place first.

Do you pay more tax in Indiana on a Toyota than a Kia ? --173.188.xx.xx |
Hhmm...Propert Tax? (by zero [IN]) Posted on: Jun 8, 2026 9:05 AM Message:
In Indiana, the brand of a car does not determine the tax rate. You pay the exact same 7% sales tax on the purchase of a Toyota as you would on a Kia. Your total tax and registration fees are based strictly on the car's value and age, not its make. --47.227.xx.xxx |

Property taxes pay for the county's expenses and at least, living where I do, I can see where my tax money is going. The snow is plowed, the roads are in good condition, the parks and libraries are lovely. I can take stuff to the dump for no charge, and the dump is clean and well run. The schools are good and we have an excellent police force that gets the training it should have.
Much different from where I moved from where the snow plows never cleared streets or even the highway, the roads were in awful shape, the schools falling apart, and where there were constant special elections for special assessments, and they collected tons more money than was needed for the special projects and all the money went into the general fund instead of being used for the special projects the voters voted for. --76.178.xxx.xxx |

Rick,
Every time someone in Indiana mentions property taxes I'm reminded of that scene from The Christmas Story (You'll shoot your eye out!) when the tax man was coming.
Back in the 40's they came into your home and you were taxed on your personal possessions: furniture, silverware, piano, jewelry, etc.
so in the movie they are scurrying to hide that stuff.
