Kitchen drawers replace (by Pat [VA]) Posted on: Jun 5, 2026 10:08 AM

Have estimate for at least 400.00 for the 4 kitchen drawers destroyed by tenants. This is a singlewide. Home Depot has 3 drawers unfinished in a base cabinet for 179.00 but it is about 4 + " taller and has to fit under counter top if we cut an opening out where drawers go. My question is can we cut some off base without compromising the integrity of the unit? --172.59.xxx.xxx

Pull out the cabinet with the destroyed drawers.

Then use 1x2 lumber and put runners on each side of the existing cabinets that are left at equal heights.

Then cut shelves to fit and install them.

Don't waste time on doors.

Now you have an open shelf arrangement for kitchen stuff.

Cost likely under $20 total.

It's a trailer, not a high end custom house. --24.180.xx.xxx

If you cut that much off the bottom of the cabinet, then you will lose the toe kick. Not only that HD cabinets are junk. I bought a new one from HD to add a cabinet and I ended up having to repair it first. I won't buy anymore cabinets from HD.

Why not just repair or rebuild the drawers in the existing cabinet. They are pretty easy to do, especially if the drawer faces are still good. --73.19.xxx.xx

There are 4 holes where the drawers were, runner pieces hanging down! 12 year tenant that lived like a pig. Had 2 boys that grew up there and put holes in the walls, floor, you name it.

I've about decided to let the guy make them, I had 3 done 5 years ago and it was 195.00 but he complained he should have charged me more so I gave him 25.00 more. He has retired.

Just an expensive lesson learned. Do inspections, kick them out when you start to see it going bad. --47.132.x.xx

Another vote for open shelves. Tenants can buy cute baskets to serve as ‘drawers’. In a commercial kitchen, things are kept in containers on open shelves for easy reach. In a high-end home, everything is hidden behind beautiful custom cabinetry. You are senior citizens renting trailers. Keep it simple, affordable, easy on tenants’ wallets if they damage, easy for you to fix. A clever housekeeper can make open shelves look so stylish. A slob can ruin the best, sturdiest cabinets. --172.59.xx.xx

I have a lot of the HD cabinets. As a matter of fact they are still being made by American Woodmark, who has a plant in my state. Although they just had a merger and who knows what will happen.

I get some cabinets that are bad, but most are fine. Usually it is the shippers that ruin the cabinets.

Will be installing another kitchen with them shortly.

As far as the trailer and the odd sized cabinets go I would make a cubby or I would replace all the lowers. If you decide to keep the place it will be easier next time. If you go to sell the place it will look nicer, maybe.

Stop trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

Guy that I went to school with bought a trailer to live in. He pulled the wall coverings and replaced with drywall. Finished and painted. Then he got a piece of land given to him so they moved the trailer. All the time, effort and money was wasted because the walls looked horrible after the move. --47.227.xx.xxx

We've had a lot of experience with paneling the bottom part of walls with the white beadboard precut and some molding on top to cover most holes. Some drywall patching on others.

It appears to be an accent wall and blends ok.

Thanks for the ideas. --47.132.x.xx
