We need new lockboxes but don't want any with electronic features, so we're looking at the Master Lock 5400D. But when you search 5400D on Amazon, 5400EC pops up. I'm guessing 5400EC is just a newer model of the same. (We've used the Shurlok brand for many years, but want something with a larger key compartment.) Any other favorites out there?

Master Lock 5400D Lock Box looks like the kind I use also. It seems to be for sale as such on HD, and about $5 less on Lowes as 5400DHC or 5400HCUC. (Both in the same listing.)
I use the lockbox for when I want to give third parties access to perform tasks. I have different code systems that I use for varying levels of trust.
For my own house, if I want the kids to have access to a key in case I'm not home, I use one of the magnetic keyboxes hidden in a secure location. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

I have a few of these as well and they work fine as long as you don't want high security.
When I was still doing rekeys and such I would get a lot of the cheaper versions from repo houses. No combo but easy enough to get into them.
The Master Lock is built better but is still simple to get into. As a matter of fact, two of them that I have right now I bought at auction because of unknown combo. I opened them, reset the combo and use them now for my empty places.
They work well for the task at hand and I think they look better than the really cheap versions from places like vaultlock. --149.34.xxx.xxx |

Right now, I have two Master and one Shur. Somehow, they keep disappearing; I know my realtor is bad about returning them.
I don't see model numbers on any of the three locks.
The Shur has a small flat-head screw on the side that you need to turn to change the code. In my experience, this flat-head screw is a pain in the neck; it requires a very small screwdriver, and the head gets messed up when I try to use a dime to turn it.
The particular model of Master lockbox I have has a plastic cover that protects the lock's wheels. I find that the cover often gets stuck in the closed position, covering the face of the box. I have deliberately broken that cover off because I hate wrestling with it and prying it open with a screwdriver. Once you have it open, you can remove the box without a second code (which might explain why I keep having lockboxes disappear).

I just looked in the project drawer at my desk and I still have a Master Lock push button lockbox that I need to get into.
It has up to 12 button length for the code. I have not been able to bypass it nor have I guessed at the code. It is still there for me to toy with when I get bored.
Thanks for the thread which reminded me. Now I will waste some more time trying to get into it without destroying it.
I consider it a hobby at this point. --149.34.xxx.xxx |

zero- assuming it came from a bank foreclosure, do you know what bank? most banks use the same combo over and over --38.248.xx.xxx |

The cheap versions were from repo's. Local banks used the same code for a long time, as did realtors.
Out of state banks hire people to do the work and just ask for the code for their paperwork.
The last units I got were from auction. They were new or returned because someone set the code and forgot it.
Still no luck on the up to 12 digit combo.

For the dial versions I have a tool that is a thin piece of metal. One I ground a little nub on it to make almost a hook.
I run it between the dials and turn slowly until I feel the notch. I do this for the other dials and remember the combo. Then I turn all the dials one place, same direction and try the unlock lever. I do this until I get the thing unlocked and then I can change the combo.
There is a way to kind of grab the lever that is behind the dials, but I have not been lucky with that.
You can check out the lockpicking lawyer on you tube. He makes all of them look so simple to get past, but that is his job and he is more practiced than I am.
I took a locksmithing course years ago, pre internet help. I know the basics. I can pick a residential lock, but not as easily as they do on TV. I have gotten past locksets in seconds before, but it was all luck.
I did pick a file cabinet lock with a paperclip once. Then I got cocky and tried it again. Failure happened. I went out and got my picks and it still took a while.
Arrogance when you are not proficient is not a good look, ha ha.
Best of luck on your dial dilemma. --47.227.xx.xxx |
