More trouble in NYC (by Richard [MI]) Posted on: May 28, 2026 9:15 AM

Looking at the news this am and it is saying NYC mayor is planning to take rental property from landlords and give it to tenants. Likely will hire many more code enforcement people, encourage tenants to report every little thing and also to deliberately break things and report them so that tickets and fines and enforcement can declare them a "BAD landlord" and confiscate their property.

My question is what are the landlords going to do about this?

After the start of 2020, in the Florida Keys where I had property, they were running short of money for the local govt. So they hired more code enforcement people and added a lot of new things you could get fined for. If someone drove by your house and threw out a food wrapper and the wind blew it onto your property, within a day, code enforcement would see it and issue you a ticket. $50 PER DAY fine until the wrapper was removed. Once you removed it, it had to be inspected (another fee) and the paperwork done (another $135 fee) after you pay the total fine.

Then the next day, another wrapper is thrown out of a car and the wind blows it onto your property and the fines start all over. Add in grass too long, any other debris, overgrown bushes, and more. It could EASILY run into thousands of dollars a month in fines. All fines go directly onto property taxes and if you don't pay they take your house.

I sold everything.

So what will you landlords in NYC do? And how long until this spreads all over your state and the country?

The house isn't the problem; it is the trash in government. Instead of selling the house, take out the trash. Trash removed, problem solved. --73.19.xxx.xx

Voting most definitely worked in this case.

That's how he got in there.

The problem is that the majority of the voters believe that he will give them everything for free and that the people paying for it all will stay and continue to fork over the money. --47.227.xx.xxx

To be sure he is a real problem. He talks crap like this to gin up his base. But he either won't or can't follow through with a lot of this crazy socialist behavior if you follow him. --76.117.xxx.xxx

Zero, I don’t believe that at all. I’m convinced that for politicians in the spotlight, whichever causes the most division gets installed. Regardless of party. --24.152.xxx.xx
