Water leak before meter (by MAT [PA]) Posted on: May 4, 2026 10:29 AM Message:
I received a letter from the water company stating they had detected a leak in my service line between the curb and the meter, which apparently is my responsibility. No details on what they found, why they think that, etc. Letter was somewhat forceful, stating I had 10 days to fix it or they might shut off my water.
Absent a puddle of water in the yard, how would they know that? I don't want to go on a wild goose chase randomly digging up the line looking for something. --108.52.xxx.xxx |

In my neck of the woods, the water company is responsible for everything up to the utility connection on the meter. The customer is responsible for everything from the customer connection side of the meter to the property. I'd call for clarification.

Here also they are responsible to the meter. We are responsible after that. I went through this recently.

In my area some cities i am responsible to the curb box and some i am responsible all the way to the street connection.Go in your basement where the main line comes into the house and stick your ear down near the line coming into the house and often you can hear it sounds like a train noise,if you hear that you have a problem. either way like RB said they want cooperation, so call them and ask what to do and they will tell you,in my area there are a few plumbers who handle all that outside work --38.248.xx.xx |

Look up the number for the water department, make sure contact information matches what is on the letter. If it doesn’t match use the number you looked up to make inquiries.
In my city, water department is responsible to the meter in the basement. At one house, we recently were experiencing very loud noises when higher volume of water was being used, like shower and laundry at same time. When plumber figured it was at higher volume, we were even able to feel vibration in the floor. City replaced the meter at no cost. Noise gone.
One of the first repairs I did to my houses after purchase was have the shut-off valves replaced , both before and after the meter. Makes changing a faulty meter a breeze.
If you have to repair at your expense, that stinks. But, then again, that does keep water bills down. Ours are rather high here, so maybe no-cost meter replacements cost more than I think.
Just be sure to verify that the letter is legit. Scammers love to catch us being compliant without skepticism. --72.135.xxx.xxx |

Last issue like that for me the water company called me. They had just read the meter and it was way high. They were doing me a favor.
Turned out it was a fitting under the house that failed. Couldn't hear it because it was still under the dirt. Did a couple test digs trying to find the issue before someone suggested under the house proper.
It was remedied in a day. Water company gave us discounts on the bill because of it. Tenant lost her mind when she got the first bill.
Fortunately it was my daughter. We had already discussed the issue with her, but it was still a shock. --47.227.xx.xxx |

I initially thought it might be a scam as well, given the appeal to urgency. I spoke to someone at the number on my regular bill, though, and it's legit. The person I spoke to was zero help, though. Couldn't give me any clues on how they identified it, etc. So I'm just supposed to hire a backhoe and dig up 30 feet of yard from the curb to the house (meter is in the basement) looking for a mystery leak? Gotta be a better way.
Water company is a national firm with operations in 14 states. Trying to drill down to a local person who can actually offer some insights is very difficult. --108.52.xxx.xxx |

find out who does a lot of this kind of work as a plummer, have the curb box shut off and determine if the leak is on the house side or street side. you wont dig up the whole thing,at least in my area they dig a hole at each end and push it through the dirt with water, i had one done that way almost 100 feet. they dont allow a patch underground so everything goes.the water dept may give you names or try facebook,i would ask on local garage sale sites and have all kinds of answers and may get told who does that kind of work --38.248.xx.xx |

The most cost effective is to use Uponor pex 3/4” piping where find out more by contacting Uponor to see how this works. When they installed the fiber optic in house they did not dig up yard. Pex will last many times longer than copper or galvanized piping. Also view videos on You Tube how Uponor pex commercial grade piping works. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

If it is before the meter, how do they know it's leaking and how can they charge you if they don't know how much water is leaking. --94.140.x.xxx |

So in my hood traces of lead were in water from the old 1" pipes. When they finally decided to swap the 100 yr old plumbing (at the homeowners cost ...of course) they ran 3/4" pipes inside the old 1" pipes. --198.168.xx.xxx |

a leak before the meter?
Turm off the value just after the meter and look at the nettle valve on the meter to see if it is slowly moving or pulsing. If it is doing that, then turn off the water valve before the meter and monitor the water pressure or nettle valve again for that quiver.
This will also ID if you have a toilet leaking
