TicToc Scam? (by Ray-N-Pa [PA]) Posted on: Apr 23, 2026 7:01 AM

Lately I have had great success in finding new residents. Getting places filled have taken less than a week the last three times this year.

After I had someone put money down on a place, I told them that the place would be ready om 30 April. I wanted to get rid of some old CPVC water lines and upgrade them to pex water lines.

Two days later, yesterday - I get a call from an out of area phone number. I have a tool on my phone that prescreens callers by forcing them to announce their name and reason for calling. They message received in my voicemail surprised me. She said that she was waiting at the house on our 1 PM viewing. Huh? I didn't set up anything for that place; it is still waiting on our handy man. I called them back and they said that on Tic Toc they gave someone $800 to hold the place until they could come look at the place. I let her know that I still don't use social media directly.

I am pretty sure she has been scammed. This means scammers have upped their game. They took off my water marks from my photos. Does someone know how to prevent water marks from getting removed? Also has this happened to anyone else. I am wonder how widespread this issue is

You can’t prevent the removal of water marks with Ai working against you. Super easy to do. --24.152.xxx.xx

The only defense I’ve found thus far is posting flyers in the windows with a QR code linking to my website, stating something to the effect of, “Unless you booked your showing through here, you’re being scammed.” With AI, watermarks no longer offer any protection. --134.238.xxx.xx

This is part of the reason some people get so defensive about giving me any personal info when I place an ad on Craig's List. They are always "afraid of their identity being stolen".

I am noticing on the local Remax agency in nearest town that handles rentals for owners, they require a completed application for 50.00 all adults over 18, before will even show the property. Then you have 24 hours to give deposit (if approved) or lose your spot. --216.126.xx.xx

My idiotic stepson was angry at Zucker for allowing FB Marketplace rental scans, LOL! The local scam ad he was referring to was stating that there were 1 bdrm apts with heat included in a very popular area of town with lots of stores/great schools for $850 a month!! OBVIOUSLY a scam because a 1 bdrm WITHOUT utilities in this town are easily going for $1500.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Somehow this is a lesson that the foolish have not yet learned. I don't feel sorry for them at all.

Again, another good reason NEVER to advertise the exact street address nor exterior photos of the vacancy to avoid ad hijackers. --64.246.xxx.xx

mapleleaf, in my case they took pictures from a MLS listing which gives the address and the pictures show it as vacant. --38.248.xx.xxx
