‘Squad’ Member Ayanna Pressley: ‘Eviction Is an Act of Violence,’ ‘Housing Is a Human Right’

3:43

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) says that her “HELP Act would give a lifeline to families facing eviction and vital resources during this time of crisis,” arguing that “housing is a human right” and that “evictions are an act of policy violence.”

Promoting the act on social media, Pressley said:

Eviction is an act of violence, and we have to do everything to prevent it. It is devastating for the families. It degrades the health of communities.

There is great stigma associated with it. It affects your credit score. Housing is a human right. It is a predictor of health outcomes.

It’s essential for social and economic mobility, and so many people, when they receive a notice to quit or to vacate their homes, usually because of non payment, because wages are not keeping pace with inflation, they don’t know their rights, and a lot of times, they will just accept that notice to quit and leave. And so my legislation is making sure they have access because we found that when tenants know their rights, when they have access to legal counsel we can usually keep them safely housed.

Pressley’s comments on eviction are consistent with the housing agenda she has pursued alongside other members of the “Squad.” During the coronavirus pandemic, Pressley joined Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in backing legislation that would have canceled rent and mortgage payments nationwide.

Pressley and the other lawmakers first supported the proposal in 2020 and later reintroduced the legislation in March 2021.

The housing push also drew attention because both Tlaib and Pressley reported receiving rental income while supporting a nationwide pause on rent payments. Tlaib disclosed receiving between $15,001 and $50,000 in rental income in both 2020 and 2021 from a Detroit property she owns, while Pressley and her husband reported between $5,000 and $15,000 in rental income in 2020.

In February 2024, after Walgreens announced the closure of another pharmacy location in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Pressley said the move was “part of a larger trend of abandoning low-income communities” and described it as “life-threatening acts of racial and economic discrimination.”

Pressley has touched on similar themes in remarks on other issues.

In October 2025, Pressley marked Columbus Day by posting on social media that “We are all on stolen land” while celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, accusing Republicans of attempting to “whitewash American history,” and stating that the country had inflicted trauma on Indigenous communities and that her office would continue “centering Native voices” in policymaking.

Pressley has also faced scrutiny over spending by her congressional office after records reviewed in 2022 showed she spent roughly $63,000 in taxpayer-funded Member Representational Allowance money on private security services in 2021, despite repeatedly backing efforts to defund the police and reallocate resources away from traditional law enforcement.

Pressley said in 2020 that policing should be reimagined through what she described as “true reparations” and greater investment in communities, and in 2021 said she supported “a radical reimagining of community safety and public safety.” The spending was disclosed as Pressley and other members of the “Squad” continued supporting efforts to defund the police, even as other Democrats, including then-President Joe Biden, rejected the movement and called on Congress to “FUND the police.”

Maybe teaching responsibility is a better idea? Who even listens to these people? Besides the voter base who will be forgotten the day after the election, who listens or takes them seriously? --174.249.xx.xxx

"Maybe teaching responsibility is a better idea?"

In 2026? Not likely.

"Who even listens to these people?"

Those not taught responsibility.

Is there anyone left to teach responsibility? The older generations are dying off.

Eviction is an act of violence?

Fortunately I am having better luck with choosing tenants so I do not find myself being forced into that particular violence.

One time at the apartment building her boyfriend was beating her up where decided to put a stop to that. Called the police where he was arrested that night along with could never return to the apartment building. Violence ends when he would kill his girlfriend where that needs to stop once and for all. Unfortunately she found through the police that I reported the incident where later made problems with building inspector where complained about mold in bathroom where the building inspector told should have raised rent in the meantime the amount of illegal apartments in houses he does absolutely nothing. Went to the head building inspector where showed front load washing machines and commercial natural laundromat heavy clothes dryers where she doing laundry in the bathtub with hot water which caused the problem. She also torn up the grout between the commercial porcelain tiles which was easy fix. She had sister move in than later they moved out end of story. A bailiff asked where they moved to where told him to drive on the street where did not give specific address where she though she drive forever not making payments on vehicle was repossed. In the apartment buildings when ever there was domestic event did not talk to them where called the police then the police talked to the couple where after that no more problems as if the police came back they maybe arrested. Illegal drugs is where money become a problem where then arguments begin. Installing security cameras on the outside prevents a lot of crime as drug dealers do not want to show up. In Canada it is illegal to carry a handgun or assault rifle where only police, security can carry a handgun. The sheriff came with a bullet proof vest and glock. Most of the serious crimes are with the illegal drug trade. If can prove illegal drug dealing that is grounds for a eviction as the tenants are impairing the safety of tenants and landlord. They changed the eviction laws here where the tenant must pay 50 per cent of the rent arrears into hearing along with must put in paper all maintenance and repair issues where only they can be raised. Some of them do not show up where again if the rent arrears are not paid the order possession goes through where the sheriff is going to show up. Always sheriff asks if there are pets or children which does not change the situation or time of year. January a lot evictions happen as everything is closed over holidays where then the evictions begin where tenants think they can stay until spring. Landlords expect rent where rent arrears should never be used to substance abuse. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Sorry that they allow the deadbeats to stay for free around the holidays.

I would evict on Christmas Eve if that was the due date.

Had a tenant that stopped paying her electric bill in the winter. She saw on FB that they couldn't shut it off when it was cold outside. Then she stacked the deck by letting them know she had a minor child living there.

Electric company contacted me and I said shut it off if they needed to. They did. Then I let her know that was the last time I would allow her electric to get shut off. Told her the next time she just needed to move.

A few months later it got shut off again, and she moved out.

When we got to court she asked for more time. I said absolutely not. I kept working with her in the past because I didn't want to deal with the rehab. One of the smartest things I did was boot her and change my lease to state not having utilities on is a violation. --47.227.xx.xxx

The reason there are so many narcissists out there is because no one ever teaches CONSEQUENCES to their children and holds them accountable. Therefore nothing is ever their fault, it is always the other persons fault. What a messed up world.

I like evict to teach there are swift and adverse CONSEQUENCES to their actions. --208.67.xxx.xx

On credit checks unpaid utilities and unpaid rent go hand in hand. Even though heat is included if they can not pay a hydro electric of $50 CDN dollars or less per month than rent will be a problem. Next time they look if in the same city or town they can not sign for hydro electricity then end of story. I had one wanting to take me to the human rights tribunal where she two unpaid bills of around $700 dollars where told the rent must come directly from social assistance where do not want to even to do that as they renege later. The previous landlord not recommended where could not provide specific information.. Housing as a last resort is the housing authority now call community housing no credit check. Once in rent arrears homeless. --216.110.xxx.xxx
