Anyone watch new build home inspection videos? I watch a lot of home inspectors posting their bad inspection videos and it's pretty horrifying. What is going on in the home building industry is criminal, plain and simple. This is new stuff - five years or so. It did not used to be THIS bad.

As the long time owner of a construction company I can tell you this from experience. Many/most of the illegal workers coming from other countries do not know much if anything about construction. They are just bodies on the job. They don't have any idea of local codes or methods and usually don't care either. It would be like you or me trying to build a new car or a complex computer with no idea or training. Add in lack of good inspection combined with some company owners just caring only about profits and not quality and what do you expect.
When America was younger (late 1800's up until about 1946)houses were constructed by locals and by European people that came here to be Americans. These were the people that built castles, the great houses of Europe and the homes in Europe that stand for hundreds of years. They had skill and were proud of what they did. Just look at the older towns and the magnificent Victorian houses. Current illegal invaders can barely build a small cracker box and these videos you mention show it to be true. Not only do they not know what they are doing, they don't care. I ran into them all the time. Their pretty much universal mindset and method of work was "up yours, up your country and it's rules". They often told me "we are here to get every dollar we can any way we can and take it either back to our country or somewhere we want to be". They could care less about us or our country, much like a thief doesn't care who they hurt. I don't understand why we tolerate it.(It's because we, as a society, have become soft and weak and they know it). Too many people buy into the fake stories and have sympathy and are played for fools. Too many people, unless they are physically damaged, just ignore it and pretend it's not so bad. --172.222.xx.xxx |

A friend bought a brand-new condo from Pulte. Windows didn't match, 1" gap between tile planks in the bathroom, HVAC that was wildly out of balance between first and second floors. (They told her that up to a 7 degree difference between floors was "in range.") And then dumb shortcuts like no outside water spigot, eaves that are too short to allow proper ventilation and water diversion, etc. etc.
This is why I'd rather buy an older house and remodel it than buy new construction. --104.230.xxx.xxx |

First flip house I bought when I was still at the W2.
I hired a contractor to reroof it. There was some decking to replace on a vaulted ceiling great room that used to be a garage.
Got off work and went over to do some stuff. Noticed how much roofing he had gotten done and climbed up to see what was what.
Soft spot where the new decking went. Climbed back down, went inside and looked. No rock on the ceiling so it was easy to see he just dropped a sheet of osb and nailed it. The end was between two rafters.
Went back up and started looking closer. He put ridge vent on but didn't cut the roof out. He also used short nails to put it on so a breeze would remove it.
Contacted his insurance company but they would only cover if a problem occurred that involved damages or injury.
Thing is he knew I used to build houses for a living.
Some people just don't care, or they don't know and wing it.
