I have had 2 steroid injections,, only lasted for a month or so,..a friend tells me his elderly mother gets a gel injections that lasts for months? anyone ever get one? How did it go?

There is a new tool that is called GAE,.it almost sounds to good to be true but its done at respected places like the Cleveland clinic and other similar places,

Here is a description of it

Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive treatment for osteoarthritis in your knee. It relieves pain and other arthritis symptoms without surgery.

There wasn't any around me last year for about a 100 miles I see now a number of clinics now offer it w/ 30-50 miles of here,,anyone done that? --75.69.xx.xx

Not heard of that one. I had a friend who did the steroids 3 times and doctor wouldn't do more. Then he had 5-6 stem cell treatments and has been walking much better for more than a year now. After talking with him, I have no doubt that he will have to have a knee replacement at some point, he's just trying to kick the can down the road a few years. --99.64.xx.xx

Well I guess posting links to the UCLA medical center is not allowed so do your own research on GAE on your own,..may be the best choice for some people --75.69.xx.xx

I've had both knees replaced.

Started with steroids. Tried the gel shot...it's derived from the juice in a rooster's comb! Doc asked if I experienced any side effects. I said yeah, I went to a gamecocks ball game! (I'm in SC). He said that was a pretty severe side effect.

Anyways, it worked better than the steroid, and is better for you long term. But it didn't work forever.

Got one knee 12 years ago and the other one year ago. Both are working well. I can still kneel and am mostly pain free in both knees. --74.222.xxx.xx

When you say you got one knee 12 years ago and the other one year ago,..do you mean a total knee replacement? I see the stats say 20% of people polled that have that done regret it,.

Not sure I want to take that chance yet,.I had a sister that had it done and she was one that regretted it,.also an Aunt that had both done and she never walked again, (but she was hyper sensitive and would not do the post operation exercises,..

So you might not benefit from GAE,.but Maybe a family member/friend might, (?) --75.69.xx.xx

SoftWave Therapy

I had an accident that caused my shoulder to be dislocated backward (posterior dislocation)

After that happened I couldn't even raise my arm. Went to ortho Dr. and he said needed surgery because my front labrum tore (Bankart)

Insurance required me to have physical therapy before shoulder surgery would be authorized. The pain of the PT was terrible and wasn't helping.

I was told about SoftWave Therapy a noninvasive no drug treatment that causes your bodies own stem cells to be activated to the treated / damaged site.

Had 12-13 treatments over a 2-3 month period and my arm was fixed! No surgery, no side effects, no recovery time.

An older gentleman that had treatments at the same time and he had one of his knees replaced and said he had tried all the 'normal' treatments and nothing had helped his pain like SW.

That was 4 years ago and I have been back about once a year for a follow-up tune up and have had no setbacks or side effects.

Total cost around $1,500. Treatment is not covered by insurance but my deductible is $5,000!

Google SoftWave Therapy. I've recommended to several people with positive outcomes. Won't fix everything but check it out. I'm very pleased. Worst that happens is you lose a few bucks, Good Luck

When I think of knee issues, I think about folks who do flooring installs for decades.

What career path did you follow Potter? Were born with bad knees or was this an environmental, sports or vocational cause? --173.188.xx.xxx

I've been doing the steroid injections for about 3 years, and just recently they have not helped the full 3 months between injections. Now I find out that those injections actually ruin what cartiledge is left. Guess I should have done some research before starting. I've had a couple of the gel injections, but the results were pretty much the same for me. Anyway, the best thing for my bad knee has been swimming. Wish I had focused on that 3 years ago! --50.230.xxx.xxx

Yes, tore my meniscus in Pilates few ago.

First was a steroid gave some relief for few months. After which

My tear is inoperative. I get a new gel shot every 6 to 8 months.

I've tried a couple kinds of the gel with great results.

I read that the steroids are not as safe long term in the same area. --23.244.xx.xx

Gee, I really hope you guys check out the "genicular artery embolism" proceedure, , there are a number of Drs explaining it on You tube,..I particularly like the Dr from UCLA and his explanation, if you go to youtube,..he is the bald Dr on the first page,..

I've talked to several people that have had it done with very good results and I think I'm going to do it soon,.takes about 1-2 hours and you can walk out of the clinic, it's totally painless and you can do pretty much everything right after except lift heavy things for 4-5 days,.

I tried to put a link on it from that Dr but I'm thinking that's not allowed here (had never tried that before) Unless I did something wrong,.. But as I said you can see/hear certified Drs explaining it on Youtube,..I believe its covered by most insurances

My wife had both knees fully replaced 9 months apart from 2020 to 2021. She was 73 when she had the surgeries. Had much pain walking more than a block until she had surgeries.

She is very pleased. She has 8,000 step days even now.

Everyone said she has to do the postop exercises & use the ice machines. The postop exercises were difficult but she succeeded. If you don't do the "range of motion" exercises, you never regain the full range of motion.

The 2nd knee was a much easier process. I think it was mostly because she didn't have the fear of the unknown. --45.37.xxx.xxx

Said this on another "knee thread" .... had total knee replacement. One 2020 other in 2022. Walked out of the hospital. Driving the car within a week. Snow skied week 10. Skied 33 times the season of the second replacement,

It all about the Dr. Mine was Gregory Johnson out of Haverhill MA. There is also a robotic procedure now that OUT PERFORMS many of the Drs.

Trick is to have the leg STRAIGHT going into surgery. Otherwise you'll PAY for it via PT ... ask me how I know.

Your results may vary, but there's no reason to live in pain. --198.168.xx.xxx

A friend in my golf league needed TKR .... both knees.

He was a chain smoker for as long as I knew him. First surgery the knee was removed and the surgeon realized his arteries were SO brittle from decades of smoking that he would never heal. So he was wrapped up WITH NO KNEE and told to STOP SMOKING .... see ya in 6 months.

Needless to say he was never the same. --198.168.xx.xxx

So guys I get the impression that no one is really checking out genicular artery embolism,..GAE, ..really do.as the more I talk to people that have had it done, the more I'm impressed with it,..I probably will do it fairly soon, said to be painless takes about 1-2 hours and you walk out of the clinic and recover in a day or so,.it's also covered by my Blue cross,..do take the time to check it out, maybe for future you ,a fiend or family member. So far the 6 people I talked to are very happy they had it done.

Yes I believe so, but you can ask a center that does it, they are usually happy to answer any questions

,..at least the ones I tried, and its

Done also at big centers like UCLA, Columbia and Mayo. I have called New England Baptist in Boston, famous for their orthopedics.

But smaller clinics might even be better,.I am going to have it done at Endovascular Center in West Springfield Ma.based on three people who I talked to that had it done there

They were great answering any questions I had, just Google hem for their number.

You probably have clinic's close to you. --75.69.xx.xx
