Reach LL at state level (by elliot [RI]) Posted on: Feb 8, 2026 1:23 PM

Long shot asking. We are the smallest state in the union, true blue. Last couple years we fought at state house to stop many crazy bills like rent controls, first refusal, just cause eviction etc. Providence Council president just introduced rent control, a renter herself. Providence has 15 council members, 4 are renters, 4 are landlords, I heard that the mayor will veto, but if majority council member supports it, it will pass.

I sat down with the person who has worked hard behind scene at state and city level. His biggest frustration is, he can't reach more landlords and the big players in town (The owners of many lofts). If every landlord contribute $50-$100, the association can hire lobbyist or alike, all politicians will pay attention and much less nonsensical bills will get passed.

We have a facebook group of 2000 members, according to him, only 5-10% are actively supporting/contributing to the cause. Too many landlords bury their heads in sand thinking/wishing "the other guys will participate". The coalition invested into technology to do text message and mail campaign, app to make life easier to submit testimonies, etc. He felt that direct messages work the best. He texts me all the time to remind me to submit testimonies, chip in the raising fun campaign, and I acted because I know him.

My question is, has any of your associations have success in rallying landlords for good causes and get them to open their wallets? Landlords are cheap and foolish by not getting involved. Often times I heard the saying, "If you are not at the table, you are on the menu" when it comes to politics.

Question 2, how do you reach the deep pockets when the owners are behind corporations/LLCs? or they simply don't care?

Thanks for reading! --173.69.xx.xxx

I think the problem is they don't think it will happen to them. I love NE's posts but he clearly believes that these looney toon laws won't come his way or he'll be able to "self help" his way out of things.

This is the type of thinking that keeps landlords from getting involved.

Nothing is a problem until it lands in your backyard...thus well insulated ideologues and politicians. I had to laugh at a recent Dennis Block's youtube video where a caller, who obviously is a tenant and admitted as much, now is incredulous over the fact that all the rules the landlords have to follow now apply to HER since she is SUBLETTING rooms out in her own apartment! She asked about exemptions from Good Cause, etc. and NOPE. Sorry but my schadenfreude was off the charts. --64.246.xxx.xx

Those that want control of things have learned long ago how to manipulate populations to get what they want, especially if they are willing to play the long game.

Just one way they are currently and for the last 75=100 plus years using is to make the general population less caring about the leaders. Among the terms we have integrated into our lives are "lesser of two evils" when it comes to who we have to choose between. Also we have, in my opinion, deliberately been, mostly by advertising, trained/led into the ideas of buy now/pay later which puts so many into debt they will need to work a lifetime to even try to pay. Add in the bread and circus stuff (are you watching the super bowl today?) pro sports, children's sports, and just general wasting time and getting nothing done and you produce a population that gets to a point where it's "let someone else do it".

Then those that want to be in control only need maybe 10-15 percent of people to vote to get their candidates into the govt. Just look at most any election other than the president - the local elections- and you typically see very low turnouts. People are "too busy, too lazy, whatever" to bother to vote. Then they complain but those who got in could care less. Just look at most any blue area. New York? Calif? How about Virginia just in the last week or so? You get what you allow. They make you lazy, busy and complacent then they take everything from you and you slave away all your life trying to pay for the baubles and entertainment they convinced you that you need.

As to your landlords in Rhode Island, you ask why don't more of them get after it and participate. Why indeed? --75.7.xx.xx

You have a council woman who is a renter. That’s a problem within this country. There was a time where it was men and property owners were the only ones who could vote. Hopefully when the pendulum swings back, it’ll swing back that far! --24.152.xxx.xx

If you have a FB group, then you could use that as your point of contact. That is probably going to be your best option besides mail as all calls go to voicemail nowadays.

Put that information to your face book group and tell them to be sure and pass it along to all their LL friends. I would be more pacific on the percentage of LL contribute and why that is a problem and what the end result will be.

Otherwise start mailing.

Just random thoughts. --73.19.xxx.xx

NE, I belong to the town Zoning board, and go to and contribute to the local landlord group. I follow the latest law trends not only in my state but in others as well. We can only hope that when (not if) these crazy laws to take away private property rights come to you that you won't get caught cheating. They are proposing a $50K per violation fine for violating the up and coming Winter Eviction moratorium here.

And yes, I think the 19th amendment was a bad idea even as a female. The vast majority of women "feel" they don't lend themselves to logic. There are very few women that use logic and are in the Margaret Thatcher camp. --64.246.xxx.xx

Also in my local landlord group, I urge them to take political action by contacting their rep. Although we, like CA and MA have one party rule so we can only do so much. --64.246.xxx.xx

Mapleaf, funny my wife agrees with you fully. Women run on emotions and ruins things in all good intention. I don't know anything about women, don't yell at me for being a messenger. We are in a disaster locally, 23 year old drunk driver as city council, 20 something year old socialist/commie run for city mayor, then you get local highly educated white women support them.

We are at the similar time of end of Roman empire.. I am by nature a pessimistic person, knowing very well, we are just putting out fires by some small buckets. I really want to be like NE, just walk away, then God put a conscience in my heart and look at the guy who has worked so hard for so long, don't know how I can walk away. Ironically I don't know much about politics and not an articulate person at all, what use do I have for the cause? --173.69.xx.xxx

Agree with 6x6 in TN. You might have good luck going on tenant websites to inform them that these bills will increase their rent and decrease their privacy.

If you get tenants that agree with you, ask them to inform their state legislature to say no to these said proposals.

You may want to check out landlord's "for rent" sites and inform the LL about what is happening at the state level. --76.35.xxx.xx
