Wonder why your qualified resident is falling behind?

Todays' news:

"Half the men in the U.S. between 18 and 49 have a sports betting account. Among sports bettors, 23% say they’re addicted; the share jumps to 37% for Gen-Z. One in five people with a gambling addiction attempt suicide. Personal bankruptcy filings increased by 28% in states that legalized sports betting after a 2018 Supreme Court ruling."

Everyone wants to be a winner.

Do you suppose there is a way to discover this during screening?

Would it show on a bank statement as "irresponsible betting", or "casino name"? Probably not.

You might see it on credit card statements, but getting & reviewing them all adds a bit to "normal" screening.

There are a couple brick & mortar gambling establishments near me, & I heard a news report recently on how much money one made in profit over the last year.

Happy to say that I do not have a sports gambling addiction.

First of all I do not like sports as a general rule. Wife watches the Atlanta Braves so I do on occasion. Nothing else comes up.

She and the kids used to watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, but since they went full on woke that isn't on either.

Guy I graduated with has a bit of a problem. I think it is just that he likes to gamble and sports gambling is the easiest thing to get around here.

I've never bought a lottery ticket. However, I'm pretty sure my son is a gambler, which has always made me very sad.

My husband's uncle had a problem with gambling.

I struggled with alcohol addiction as did my mother so I am not being "Holier than thou".

No surprise.

Gambling has been made a lot easier with technology. As Larry mentioned they just use their phones.

And yes, you can see some of it on bank statements.

The worst part is how heavily it is advertised.

The really stupid part is at the end of the advertisement they tell people that if they have a gambling problem to seek help all the while convincing them to gamble.

As with everything, it really has nothing to do with caring about people or being their friend, but rather how much money can be made off of them. If you took the money out of the equation would the ads exist?

Sort of like a commercial done by an appliance store in my area. They play this commercial on Sundays telling people that "like you, we know this isn't the time to think about appliances..." and yet there they go explaining what all brands they carry and when they will be open again ect...on this appliance commercial that is geared towards getting people to think about appliances. Can you say hypocrite? I wonder how many people catch on to these types of things?

Just listened to a real estate bubble rant on YouTube. And it was brought up that today's buyer is quintessentially unqualified. Lots of Doom spending and irresponsibility whereas the same age bracket home buyer 20 years ago was much more qualified and aware of making decisions that lead to being a good risk/stable.

As LLs we must be aware it is affecting our renters.

The online aspect is a new vice, available everywhere, no matter the state laws, and is growing FAST.

Gambling addiction came to light when a good resident started falling behind.

Solid applicant, no gambling when he applied, got hooked almost instantly, later and later on rent, lost his family and wife's income, then eviction.

My spouse's best friend is a teacher, has been for many years. Her husband had a good job as a boss type in a factory.

They were always struggling financially.

She had enough, for various reasons and they split up. Then it was her money and his money. She was so worried about how she could care for herself, her two kids and the household.

Not only did she do it, but she flourished.

Turns out that he had (has?) a gambling problem. He would stop in the morning and buy scratch off lottery tickets. Then he would do the same at all breaks, lunch and after work.

She is so mad at herself for not checking the bank account, but she trusted her husband.

friend went thru a bitter divorce from a trust fund baby....during discovery it came out that he lost 74k to online sports gambling .

It's no secret that gambling is just a sneaky way of taxing the poor and elderly.

"She never knew" is such a common response. I hate that this online gambling is bascially "invisible", esp if the family does not use checking or credit cards with statement to see the activity.

I double hate that this insidious evil creeps in to affect MY business!

There's a casino in my area that has slot machines in every denomination of coin. I opted to eat at a restaurant a few weeks back located in the casino. This was in the middle of the day around 1:00 pm. The place looked literally like a geriatric clinic. Everyone was in their 80's and many of them were in wheelchairs playing the slots. The casino buses these folks in from nearby states.

I mentioned this to a friend who says his 90 year old sister takes trips like this to escape boredom. She spends $ 20 on the slots and a few dollars on a meal and it's cheap entertainment for her. I can see that appeal to some older folks. I'd prefer to read a book or do something educational to escape boredom if it came to that. Gambling has never been my thing as it's just a money losing proposition.

My experience is that life is not designed for instant success. Almost every time it takes lots of effort that leads to lots of experiences that leads to wisdom and frugality.

Our media and culture emphasizes those who had quick success, not those who pushed through it all.

Those spending so much on gambling are ignoring the reality of life.

For that matter, life doesn't owe you anything because you need it. It's design is because you deserve it.

Wife bought a few scratchers to put in stockings and hand out to our parents.

It's cheap entertainment.

She doesn't expect anyone to hit it big. When someone wins a dollar it's a big deal. Everyone yells it out loud and then starts making plans for the big payday.

It's short term fun.

Around here the lottery is referred to as the Redneck Retirement Fund*.

I get it.

So it was a nice evening. The wife had some games set up, holiday themed.

The winners got a scratcher.

My oldest (30) won $5 and you would have thought she was ready to retire.

I went on a cruise recently. When I went to the casino, I lost the first 2 days, I decided to stop and watch others. I stood politely behind people playing $100 chips. I would have made the same decisions they did…. except they lost, not me.
