Got the first of what I assume will be several messages from our Sec8 residents who pay part of their rent - "Do not pull our rent. Need the money for food since my SNAP will not be coming."

Newspaper says emergency funds should be available in a week or so.

How are your folks doing?

Hoping that, now that the Democrats' voter base is being affected by the shut-down, something may happen to end it.

I don't have a SNAP recipient residents, but: If you need a temporary loan to be able to pay rent, get a loan from someone who does that. I don't.

Meeting with our local VFW next Wednesday.

I will be asking them to match my $1,000 contribution to our local food bank.

Where part of the VFW charter is to defend the Constitution, in this case we might need to defend her citizens from her own government in-action. --67.140.xx.xxx

Because my son is a federal employee who has a mortgage, wife & 3 kids.

Thankfully. They also have savings and he says they are good for a few months.

"Somebody" taught him how to manage money when he was young, and he learned well.

And no - not all federal employees are lazy. He's actually doing a military job, but on civil service pay - Strange but true - you have to be an Air Force reservest to do it & wear the uniform.

He also still needs to do his weekend duty with no pay.

Since I've moved away from C- and below properties I haven't had nearly as much drama like this. I do have one young Federal worker (Engineer) that has been furloughed but so far is plugging along. I'm guessing he's burning through the downpayment he's been saving for a house. I may lose him when he gets that big check once the government reopens because I know he has been doing side gigs while he's off so he will end up being more than whole on income. --209.205.xxx.xx

I have at least three fed employees. All three work for the VA.

One gave me a heads up when the shutdown started that she might not have rent. I told her late fees would be in order for a while but if it lasted too long she would have to leave. She admits she never put anything aside for this possibility.

As far as I know none of them are without pay. If they are they have not whined to my deaf ears.

I think I still have a couple tenants that get some food stamps, or SNAP or whatever it is called. None have contacted me yet, but when they do it will not be me saying it's fine to not pay rent.

If I actually had people that were hurt by this I would have a different outlook I guess. Getting free food when you actually work is not something I think should happen. Even worse is getting it because you won't work. --47.248.xxx.xxx

I have several retirees renting rooms from me. One mentioned to me yesterday that he wasn't getting food stamps for the month. I asked if he was aware of the local food pantries; he was. I encouraged him to be at the front of the line instead of the back, but he didn't seem to feel any urgency in stocking up.

Every food pantry in my area (of which there are many) is sending out an urgent request for emergency donations. I don't know how much is actually needed and how much is opportunistic. I agree that vast amounts of food are wasted by SNAP and food bank recipients. And those recipients are so used to being taken care of that I don't think it has really sunk in.

Definitely important to hold the line, though. It's a lot easier to find help with food than it is to find someone to pay your rent.

Do the math. The FREEDOM!!! thing is working better thanks to the govt rent giving us $825 more per month than I was getting, even when she's $100 short this month, just $725 more right now until they catch up.

I used to feel that way too, until I realized I was getting MY tax dollars back.

In today's economy I prefer Sec8. It is more secure than someone with a decent job which can be eliminated at any moment.

Not all Sec8 renters are leaches. The ones we have are decent folks who just need assistance- like this mother who chose life rather than the advice to cull the weakest.

Yea, it's not just about the money. It's about helping folks with decent housing, within our guidelines, when other LLs brush them off.

I don’t do section 8 because I want to help folks not on the dole. But there is no right or wrong way. You can also look at as getting some of your tax dollars back and use that extra to be charitable where you see fit.

There is no one right or wrong way and I didn’t mean to imply my way was better. As a matter of fact it’s a less lucrative approach. But I don’t need the money and not everyone is in my position. You have to do what works best for you. --75.89.xxx.xxx
