Does Preen really work? I am looking for the best long term solution to weed control for an apartment I own. --66.29.xxx.xxx |

I typically use 41% glyphosate mixed with a little dish soap and water for the first round. That will kill a lot but doesn't last.
Then I use something that has a longer lasting effect on regrowth like old school Round-Up did. Ground Clear works well too.
Sorry, you are looking for something that kills weeds in established yards. My bad.
I had always used 2/4/D for killing the broad leafy weeds.
Looks like Preen is more for keeping new weeds from maturing.
Following this thread to learn. --47.248.xxx.xxx |

I use Preen on a flower bed on the side of my rental. It seems to really help keep out the weeds. --75.23.xxx.xxx |

Yes it really works. It is a pre-emergent. That is, it keeps seeds from sprouting. It will not kill plants that have already sprouted or are growing. When I say seeds, I mean any seeds. Not just weeds. So, don't put it on your garden if you plant from seeds or waste your money overseeding grass seed. They simply will not sprout.
When I first redid my lawn, I used it in the spring several years in a row and it's made a huge difference. It keeps the crab grass and other weeds from germinating in the spring allowing the fescue to fill in. I still put it down in the spring just to keep those weed seeds in the soil at bay. It takes years for weed seeds in the soil to die. --209.205.xxx.xx |

Anyone else? I triedit years ago and did not really notice a difference but I did not pay that much attention. --66.29.xxx.xxx |

I am a big fan of Preen for flower and landscaping beds. Get the "Extended Control" type, which works for 6 months. It's a bit pricey, but not double the cost of the regular, 3 month control Preen. You can put it right on top of mulch - but then remember that if you disturb the mulch, you have to reapply in that area.
OH has a similar climate to PA - 6 months of control means that if you put it down in March, it will work until seeds stop germinating at around the end of September.
I did that this year, and boy was that a work saver when we had a difficult spring and summer due to having a parent in hospice and then having to clean out her home when she passed. Some weeds do get through, but nothing like the quantity that you get without a pre-emergent. --100.19.xx.xx |

Oh, and it's best to buy the Preen fresh, in the late winter when it begins to show up at big box stores. Be careful to look at the container if the store sells them outside - containers that didn't sell during the warm months will be pretty grubby by late winter. You want fresh, clean containers in order to get the freshest product. (This info was passed on to me by a trusted garden center employee.) --100.19.xx.xx |

I used a bunch in my landscape beds this spring. Still had a few weeds come up, didn't think it worked well. Fast foreword to today... getting hairy now. Lot more weed pressure. So yeah, I would say it works. Still going to have a few weeds, but not near as bad.... --170.203.xxx.xxx |
