I see that some are supposed to work great but they need to be kept outside at least 20 feet from doors or windows because they smell so bad.

Any products that can be put near front door or window and don't smell really bad?

I know the odor is what attracts the flies but tenants will get rid of the bag fly catchers if they smell that bad.

And i see that the sticky strips are not that great.

So what to use???

Flies are drawn to decaying organic material...garbage, dead animals, etc. Find the source and remove it and you're 90% there. --74.37.x.xx

Check the farm/ranch stores for their options. They might have some good ones that people use to keep flies away from their stables.

Another thing, around here, restaurants put fly repellent around their outdoor seating. But it's not chemical, but visual. It messes with the fly's vision, and confuses it or makes it sense danger, so it avoids it. Different places use different methods, but they're all ultimately a combination of constant movement plus reflection. So, it might be baggies of water suspended on a string, or cds suspended on a string, or these teardrop-shaped glass vessels full of water that get suspended.

Speaking of glass vessels, there are also one-way glass fly traps that lure flies into an area full of an attractive liquid. But once they're in, they can't find their way out again. When it gets gross, you dump it all out, give it a rinse, refill it, and then keep an eye on it. --172.58.xxx.xxx

Me, the penny in a bag of water is the method we would use inside the horse barn. Hung from a rafter and it seemed to work. --174.210.xxx.xxx

Dino,

The stuff I bought at Rural King was putrid beyond belief. I wanted something for inside but QUICKLY moved it outside. But the flies which were "bugging me" (see what I did there ;) were inside, not 20 feet away.

A little apple shaped jar with orange soda pop attracted a caught many of the little buggers.

The horse barn thing works - ZIp lock bags with water and pennies, hanging around the edges.

One would think that if they can make a Japanese Beatle bag trap that smells good - smells like lemons, and works well that they could do the same for flies --98.17.xx.xxx

For inside the house?

Screens and a good, old-fashioned fly swatter.

Outdoors? It's a battle against nature. Sounds like a losing fight, but Paulio is right & the others sound worth trying --72.218.xx.xxx

Cats inside for catching sky raisins.

BTW if you have Japanese Beetle bags, change them EVERY week. Especially in high infestation areas. They stink especially after a rain or two. The lure smells kind of like chrysanthemums.

I have a electric racket that I turn on at night with all the other lights off and they fly right into it.

We live between two dairy farms and several corn fields so there's no stopping outdoor flies. --64.246.xxx.xx

I just hang a electric bug zapper. Flies come into it even in the daylight.

The best way to use bug zappers is to gift them to neighbors.

They work great but they also attract more pests with the light at night.

I put one inside my garage on a timer during the summer. We would get flying bugs in the garage and it was a nuisance. Timer allowed it to be on after we were not in there and off before we headed out for the day. --47.248.xxx.xxx
