Tenant says that the ceiling fan is turning off and on by itself. The fan has a wall switch to turn it on but a remote to control the speed and work the lights.

Where do I even start to try to figure out what the problem is with the fan? --76.178.xxx.xxx

HA HA HA!!!!

It's probably some neighbor's kid with an extra remote control messing with it.

We used to do that kind of stuff when we were young teens - a paperclip on the screen with a string. Just pluck the string and it makes a buzzing sound at the window. We'd watch from afar and every time someone was in the room, we'd pluck the string a few times. Kind of like knocking on the door and ringing the bell and running before it was answered. Kid stuff. (Maybe not real smart but --kids.) --97.85.x.xx

In the overhead J-Box (junction box), with limited space and many wires, one of the wire nuts didn't securely attach the fan wires stranded wires to the box's solid wire, causing power to switch on and then off again. --47.143.xx.xx

Change the batteries in the remote. Change the wall switch, they do wear out. THat's where I would start. --172.59.xxx.xx

Take the batteries out of the remote and see if it still does it.

See if there is some other action happening when it comes on. IE: neighbor opens their garage door, ceiling fan in adjoining room, microwave, etc.

If all else fails, turn the switch off and the ghost will be incapacitated. --209.205.xxx.xx

I would first check the switch for a loose wire. Of course, if the switch is loose or otherwise damaged, replace it.

Then climb up & check the wires in the ceiling box. Wouldn't be surprised if Robert is right. The vibration of the fan could jiggle wires loose, if they are not well-enough secured. --72.218.xx.xxx

Speaking for me only, I'd place a call to my licensed electrician.

A neighbor at one of my rentals asked me if my house had power when I was there to paint garage. Yep, we had power. Said his lights had been going on and off, then power went out. He called somebody, who was probably the rental property's handyman, who spent about fifteen, twenty minutes. Handyman was heard to say 'Call me if anything else goes on.' Fire that night. Inspection revealed it started in wiring between kitchen and upstairs. Fortunately the neighbor and his family got out safely.

Need more info. For example, how often does this happen? I'd tell them to turn the wall switch off and leave it off for 24 hours and see if the fan comes on with the switch off. If so, your issue is in the house wiring/j-box. If not, then you likely have a remote issue of some kind. In that case, take the batteries out of the remote and see if it still happens. If so, replace remote or ask neighbor if they have similar remote. --64.38.xxx.xxx

First thing to do would be to change the frequency that the remote operates at. It’s just a simple row of dip switches: one in the remote and one on the receiver. If it co to use after that, replace the pull chain for the fan --129.222.xxx.xx

Is there another fan in the apartment (or building) that has a remote? If so... very likely that could be the culprit if they have the same setting (there are switches to get the fan and the remote to their own "code" so this doesn't happen if you have more than one fan/remote). --67.253.xxx.xxx
