Anyone do their own parging ? If so, what type of mortar mixture do you use ?
Any premixed product from the big box store ?
My go to mix is 1 part Portland cement and 2 parts sand. It takes some trial and error to get the water added just right.
And an acrylic bonding solution to help with adhesion.
Wish I could find a handyman to do, but nope.

We had to do it ourselves as well. Our mason guy retired 2 yrs ago, DH then accidentally hired a 2 con artists and I fired them once I found out.

Depends on what you’re parging. Vinyl patch is good, but it’s expensive. --24.152.xxx.xx |

I've used vinyl patch also with good results.
If you mix your own buy a bag of fiberglass reinforcement to add to the mix, it will help it hold together so it won't crack out. I also usually add a gallon of latex additive for better adhesion to the bonding solution that is painted on first.
I would hire a mason before I hired a handyman to do this work. Done incorrectly it will create a mess to fix. --209.205.xxx.xx |

I also make sure that I wet the surface.
If it isn't wet it won't stick well, at least that is what I have found. --47.248.xxx.xxx |

May not be the same thing, but the only thing I've personally parged is a chimney. I used "Chimney Rx brushable crown repair" and it worked fabulously (got on Amazon). Held up over 10 years of annual inspections very well. Not sure what you'd use on a foundation though. It's an elastomeric product, meaning it remains flexible forever. --64.38.xxx.xxx |

You have to brush the dirt out well in order to get adhesion. If there is a large void the cement will not hold in it and you have to have some brick pieces of various sizes to wedge in there. I used lime as well as cement and sand, and added the glue. Sometimes it has to be done in stages: fill up the holes, let it dry, give it another coat. --73.188.xx.xxx |
