What are "Great Melting Periods"?

Ice Ages and Interglacials:

Earth's climate has alternated between cold periods called "ice ages" (or glacials) and warmer periods called "interglacials".

Glacial Retreat:

During interglacials, temperatures rise, causing glaciers and ice sheets to melt and retreat. This process is known as deglaciation.

Sea Level Rise:

As ice melts, the water flows into the oceans, causing a significant rise in sea level.

Examples of "Great Melting Periods":

* The Holocene: The current interglacial period, the Holocene epoch, began about 11,700 years ago, following the last glacial maximum.

Meltwater Pulses: During the Holocene and previous interglacials, there have been periods of particularly rapid sea level rise, known as meltwater pulses, as large ice masses melted quickly.

* MWP 1A: One example is Meltwater Pulse 1A, which occurred between 14,600 and 13,800 years ago, with sea level rising by about 16 meters.

* MWP 1B: Another pulse, MWP 1B, occurred between 11,000 and 8,800 years ago.

* MWP 1C: Meltwater Pulse 1C occurred around 8,200 to 7,600 years ago.

Causes of "Great Melting Periods":

* Orbital Cycles:

Changes in Earth's orbit around the Sun (eccentricity, obliquity, and precession) influence the amount of solar radiation reaching the planet, triggering glacial cycles.

* Plate Tectonics:

Movement of continents can alter ocean currents and atmospheric circulation patterns, affecting temperature distribution and potentially leading to glacial periods or retreats.

* Greenhouse Gases:

Changes in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere can also influence global temperatures and contribute to melting periods, according to the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory.

In Summary: "Great melting periods" are characterized by significant glacial retreat and sea level rise during interglacial periods within the Earth's climate cycle. These periods are driven by a combination of orbital cycles, plate tectonic movement, and changes in greenhouse gas concentrations.

We only seem to talk about one out of three, and we only seem to talk about now, and we only seem to talk about how can we blame and charge people?

It's happened before, it will happen again, we as a species might not survive but the earth will. --173.28.xx.xxx

Some Us Politicians are blaming Canada for the forest fires that are happening in this country where as a result of hot dry weather a lighting strike will start a forest fire where continue to wait until the super scooper fire fighter aircraft is being built where each plane cost $30 million CDN where those were used in California. India continues to use dirty coal fired power generation along burn garbage in the open where at least 20 cities have severe are pollution problems along with other nations do not want solar panels and wind turbines along with continue to use oil and coal. Some days here you can see pollution from the forest fires. The last two months it has been very dry here along where the last month the grass has not grown. In the province of coal fired power generation is gone where they gas turbines for peak along with Candu nuclear power generation where heavy water is used. Now with the tariff war where all aluminium and steel plants use electricity where in the province of Quebec only hydro electric power is used. When you cross the sky way in Hamilton Ontario you see how cleaner it is when hydro electric power is used in the smelters. This country is trying to reduce green house gasses along the EU is taking action as well. Oil and coal companies are claiming that this caused by nature not them. Twenty years ago there are few blizzards here where it took three days to clear where not that never happens where some year snow does not start until January. Going green is the next industrial revolution where buildings with high insulation, high speed rail for passenger and freight where there is domestic air travel along with planting more trees further north. In Iceland they planting trees. GOP privately will admit that climate change and tariffs are problem where publicly not. Finally to repeat Munich 1938 again to give into Putin where there are no peace it is only make things worse along the amount burning when oil refineries are bombed and other places bombed. Peace for all time started the second world war. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Maybe the last receding of the glaciers in North America about 6000 years ago was caused by the cavemen driving their cars too much, causing global warming.

I think this global warming junk is a scam made up by people wanting to cash in on it. They pick temperatures to fit their agenda and pretend those are correct. --97.85.x.xx

Robert, I don't recall hearing anyone blame Canada, rather it has been said (probably correctly) that forest fires are OCCURRRING in Canada. It has also been said that fires are occurring in California. I don't have personal knowledge, of course, but I believe both are correct.

But, I do read, almost daily, that you, Robert are pretty hurt by comments made about your country during the course of trade negotiations. Maybe it is time to just take a break from news for awhile. The politics between our countries is clearly giving you great stress.

As landlords, we don't control government policy, or trade negotiations, we just each have our one vote. BUT, we CAN control how energy-efficient we build/ remodel/ repair our buildings, as you, Robert, have long been a terrific proponent, sharing lots of wisdom and encouragement about that specific issue of energy-efficiency and weatherization. And, we can control how much plant life we maintain on our properties, which can also protect the soil life, help to return carbon back into the soil, which, according to some experts is one of the major components of 'global warming', or 'climate change.' ( more carbon has been extracted from soil than gets replaced, mostly occurring with lawns and non-rotational single-crop farming.) I'm sure there are other factors, but, I'm not going to waste my time on things I cannot do anything about. I can add insulation, weatherstripping ( most of mine are thoroughly done) I can reduce lawn, add shrubs, rain gardens, understory trees, canopy trees, grasses ( not the mowed kind, stuff like Sporobolus or Bouteloua) forbs ( flowering plants) choosing native plants whenever possible, so the native animals, especially moths and bees, have host plants to raise their young. The extensive plant cover over the earth can improve the small rain cycle, which, if functioning correctly, may help prevent major weather events like we just had in Wisconsin, or the devastating flooding in the beautiful hill country of Texas.

Yeah, the climate changes. I'm doing the things I can and not worrying about the rest. --72.135.xxx.xx

Thomas Sowell's 3 questions work here when we talk about climate change and what we should be doing:

1. Compared to what?

2. At what cost?

3. What hard evidence do you have? --72.82.xx.xx

Reminds me of a river cruise we took through Germany a few years ago. In several of the cities they had recorded the water level for major floods on the sides of a building in town by chiseling the mark and date into the stone of the building. Many of these started as far back as the 1100's. I remember thinking after seeing multiple cities that the 1300's were the worst, followed by the 1700's. Those two centuries consistently had higher flood levels than any of the 1900's or 2000's floods. Mother nature definitely has a bad temper here and there but the marks don't support that it is getting worse over time.

The other thing I came to realize after this trip. The media here is misleadingly us trying to lead us to believe that we are alone, that Europeans broadly support global warming. While it may be true that they don't dispute warming, what they don't collectively agree with is that it is caused by manmade effects noting the very reasons WMH has highlighted above. There's simply too many variables and the recorded evidence does not support all the claims. --209.205.xxx.xx

The tariffs made positive things for this country like cancelling the expensive F35 fighter planes and defence where now EV Batteries with the EU. Liquified Natural gas go directly to Asia. There is talk of building a east west energy corridor where hydro electric power will go east to west and west to east along with up north where they not use oil. They built a new aluminium smelter in Quebec which will use hydro electric power. They converted steel smelters to electric. There are meetings from EU countries moving forward where to increase trade as EU wants Aluminium made from green energy. Canadians have sold houses in Florida then leaving where never returning. ICE overheard some Canadians speaking French where detained, arrested then deported where they are never going back. Some Canadians who are living in the Us are leaving. They took off the shelves Bourbon, whisky, wine and beer from the shelves in most provinces where that is helping local industries gain market share. In the grocery stores if does not have maple leaf it can rot. If something is made in Mexico or somewhere else they buy. Steel beams and pipe used pipelines will be made here instead importing. Canadians are not travelling to Us.ICE along with remarks made by the GOP where will not spend money there. The border cities are loose tax revenue. Tourism from EU and other countries is increasing here along some Canadians are travel here. The premiers have reduced all provincial trade barriers where everything is going to be bought here. The economy is on a edge but not in recession. I will continue to insulate house along with reduce energy consumption. I have done well in the stock market with mutual funds. The outlook is that in the future they will cancel the tariffs as it is causing hardship. Canadian premiers get along very well with all the governors in the Us where come here then go to a hockey game. They know each other on a first name basis. I get along with very well with Americans. So I am positive that things will change for the better. 2 per cent GNP is going to spent on military procurement. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Canada choosing to get all things from far away instead of from a neighbor helps the environment how? Strange how you can symmetrically blame others

Of course - these choices are two way though. No more Canadian Douglas Fur timber offered at HD. But I am also alright with that too. Relationships ebb and flow. It is the cycle of things. If Canada doesn't want to send over product, I am content. Its not like HD timber is all that great to begin with and the market on trees isn't cornered. Sorta embarrassed to admit that I occasionally buy timber ay Home Depot --67.140.xx.xxx
