What are the IRS requirements to make a business convention tax deductible?
Specifically, can our local landlord group organize a legitimate tax deductible trip to Lexington, Kentucky and have a mini landlord convention? And leave enough time every day to check out the bourbon trail?
How many hours a day would we need to spend in training?
How many attendees would be needed to make it legitimate?
Cheers! --98.163.xx.xxx |

Not sure on that question. But as someone who has been on much of the Bourbon Trail- it's great.
Specifically- try to make:
Maker's
Woodford Reserve
Buffalo Trace

Did you know- Kentucky has more barrells of bourbon in the state than it does people? --74.135.xx.xx |

Yet another reason to leave the People's Republic of NYS and move to Kentucky! At my W2 job, the software vendor would host his once a year seminars at places like Charlotte, Key West, Nashville, etc. He had lectures and meetings during the day but at night, they openly encouraged bar crawling (and I mean crawling). The administrative assistant would go in afterwards and pay for the guest's drinks! --64.246.xxx.xx |

I have seen where as little as three and four hours of a cruise was spent on training.
Did the parent group get audited? Nope. I know I didn't get audited either. Would I do another cruise though? I am retired Navy, I deployed five separate times.....I am fine with a few days at the beach at this point in my life. Cruises cram you in.
In the end, it would be my believe that you would have to convince the IRS the primary focus of this meeting in KY is business and the Burbon Trail is the marketing tool you are using to get people to come.
I think that is believable - after all how did Florida, Vegas, AC, LA and Chicago get so many gathering venues? You went to Vegas strictly for landlording isn't believable. But you had five hours of training and then a road trip to the Hoover Dam is believable and acceptable. --67.140.xx.xxx |

Make it a real thing. Have 1 one or two speakers per day. 4hrs in morning, break for lunch and 4 hours in afternoon. Keep attendance. --98.34.xx.xxx |

I would think it would be OK if that is a legitimate group that has been organized for awhile and you have regular meetings.
If it is just you and members of your family, then probably not.
You would have to have hours scheduled for meetings or presentations to prove that business is happening. Maybe hire a speaker or a real estate lawyer or a tax specialist accountant to give a lecture. --76.178.xxx.xxx |

The LL Retreat is an excellent example of how to do this legally. X amount of actual training hours, then free the rest of the day. Repeat next day.
Can't remember the required number of hours: 5? 6? Look it up. --173.28.xx.xxx |

John Hyre has two-day conferences in Puerto Rico. Four hours on Friday and four hours on Monday. Can't expect people to work on a weekend, ya know! All travel expenses for those days are deductible. He's a tax accountant, so I'd trust his method. --104.230.xxx.xxx |
