Hello everyone,

Has anyone used Air Tags placed inside a HVAC unit so you can track them when stolen? Here locally they pull up and steal the units and if a cage is around them they pull if off. Not sure how long the batteries last. Any results from anyone?

Do they not have a battery that must be kept charged? --76.178.xxx.xxx

A concrete enclosure that can not be pulled. Another option is split type of heat pump where the outside is high up that can easily accessed. A very expensive option is to use a ground sourced heat pump where everything is inside the house then pipes go under ground. --216.110.xxx.xxx

AirTags would work very well for tracking down where anything went. Raptic makes a little device you can insert the AirTag into and then it clips on to anything. Just like a carabiner with a combo lock.

After several hours they will alert a nearby iPhone of a foreign AirTag. This is to prevent a stalker from putting one on someones vehicle or drop one in a purse. But you have to really close to it.

Batteries last about a year so that isn't a concern. --20.94.x.xxx

Local sheriff just busted a theft ring here because the contractor hid an air tag on his excavator.

You only have to change the battery in an air tag about once a year. --216.158.xxx.xx

Zero, I’m only familiar with the Apple tags. You have to have an apple phone for those. There are other makers for the non Apple products.

I also put one in my bag when I fly. I don’t know how many times it has come in handy with airports and hotel bag drops. --107.77.xxx.xxx

Baman,

I use Apple Airtags - each keyring with a master key, inside Porsche, Rolls...

Lots of holders on Amazon - stick on, hide, clips...

With cars I hide multiple airtags. Thieves know to look for them, Lojacks, etc. Hopefully they find one and stop looking.

BUT like Larry said, they alert the iPhone nearby they are being tracked.

They do NOT alert you the tag is being moved. YOU have to look it up it's location on your iphone.

We install a 6 foot high plastic privacy fence around each AC. 2 posts, three sided, attached to the house, torx screws. Outta sight, outta mind. The one next door is easy to steal. Not a theft after we started this.

The local scrap metal dealer will no longer accept the coils from anyone other than legit HVAC dealers. I think THAT made a big difference.

LTD would say cameras are a proven deterrence. I say then you can watch them steal it. Lotsa videos on YouTube showing the theft. Takes about 2 minutes.

A local apt complex had them on the roof. Thieves put up ladders and worked out of sight. Cut 10 loose, tossed them down and took off.

I believe manufacturers don't care because they sell more replacements.

As someone else mentioned, the air tag will inform the thief it is there.

I had a knee replaced several months back and got a medical piece of equipment to take home. On the way home I got a notification that there was an air tag present. It was in the equipment.

Since it self notifies it's pretty useless as a theft aid.
