I have a 1910 house with a cast-iron 4" pipe that dives under the basement wall and joins up outside with the clay main. There's a clean-out Y at floor level that has mysteriously developed a hole in the side.
It's not a functional issue, but it could allow sewer gas into the house. I don't want to replace it yet--we're talking $$$ to break open the floor, tunnel under the footer, and excavate the driveway.
Any ideas for a semi-permanent way to seal up the hole in the side of the cast-iron pipe so it's airtight?

Can you stick a test plug in it and call it good? --24.152.xxx.xx |

You may also be able to get a size larger fernco. Cut it down the middle and fabricate it to fit. Smear enough Lexall on there so it coats but doesn’t get into the pipe and then clamp it down good. I’ve had to do that on a few old cast sections. All of these are band aids though. --24.152.xxx.xx |

I've seen people plug cast iron temporarily by using a puddy knife and a chunk of wax from a toilet wax ring --174.59.xxx.xxx |

Take a 4” rubber coupler (or really any piece that will fit) and split it down the middle. Wrap it around the pipe in question. Trim to fit if necessary. Take two large stainless clamps and clamp it into place. For extra safety for gasses create a gasket out of silicone around the hole before placing the rubber pipe. Nice temp fix --162.204.xxx.xxx |

I have JB weld along the top of a cast iron pipe in the crawl space of a house that had a small hole. I've been meaning to replace it for the last 20 years.
If I were doing it today, I'd get NP1 or similar tube of elastomeric roof patch and cover a good foot up and down the pipe with that stuff just in case the rest of the iron is getting thin.

Robin, it sounds like you've been given some good solutions to your immediate problem. When it becomes time to address the pipe replacement, rather than rip up the driveway, look into having a liner installed in the existing pipe. --71.174.xx.xx |

Look up "pipe bursting" in your area. They pull a new pip through the old one and burst it as it goes through. Don't have to tear out the floor or foundation. permanent solution that is fairly reasonable. --71.63.xxx.xxx |

You might try silicon self fusing tape, that sticks to itself. I used that on cast iron drain in crawl space and it is hanging on after a year. --172.59.xxx.xx |
