Sadly, I learned that Landlord Locks can no longer get Lifetime Brass, which we have at most of our properties. We've had Satin Chrome at one of our properties for a number of years, but it doesn't hold up and is looking especially terrible on the front door. We had hoped to change those locks to Lifetime Brass. We first installed Lifetime Brass locks at other homes in 2008, and they still look perfect.
When I called, LL told me that Satin Chrome and Satin Nickel hold up better than any of their other currently available finishes... so I've ordered one Satin Nickel set for that worst front door (to see if it will hold up better than the Satin Chrome before replacing the others on that house).
Any input on dealing with these lock finishes? We pretty much ignore the locks until turnover, but this particularly affected lock looks hideous..... --71.246.xxx.xxx |

That is a shame. I have wondered if the brass really held up to the elements. Now I guess it doesn't matter.
What do people use for the pass thru handles? I am assuming that the deadbolts are Landlord Locks and the non-locking handles are something else. --107.147.xx.xx |

There are many polished brass locksets out there that the cores will fit in. Search for SFIC (small format interchange core) locks.
Here's an example.

Locks have three grades. Grade 1 heavy commercial grade which is designed to be used in large commercial building where will last. Light commercial grade 2 for small apartment buildings where both Grade 1 and 2 are UL rated for fire protection. Then the residential grade 3 which may have plastic parts where can be used for hallways which have no fire protection along the least difficult to break into along with heavy use will deteriorate as the lowest cost material are used. So to cheap out on locks is false saving. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I switched to satin chrome years ago when I shifted to iCore - because brass went out of style and brass locks were looking worn.
I think the satin chrome look "stronger".

Dan, I'm wondering if you are referring to the "Bright Brass" rather than the "Lifetime Brass" when saying that the Brass does not hold up well.
Landlord Locks still has "Bright Brass" but no longer has "Lifetime Brass" - the phone rep also stated that the "Bright Brass" does not hold up as well as the Chrome or the Nickel.
But our Chrome locks are scratched up and unsightly, whereas the "Lifetime Brass" locks we first installed 17 years ago look like they did the day they were installed.
I'm hoping the one Nickel set I just ordered will do better than the Chrome. --71.246.xxx.xx |

MikeA, thank you! I wasn't familiar with this, but will check out the other option you provided for locksets that can use Landlord Locks cores. --71.246.xxx.xx |

We changed the locks at our own house to icore so many years ago that I hadn't even thought of that.
Ours icores are brass and are also in excellent shape, so it seems they may also be "Lifetime Brass" as are the other types of Landlord Locks that we have at most of our rentals.
I had actually purchased the icores for our home from Landlord Locks back then, but now I don't see them on their website. --71.246.xxx.xx |
