I was just reading instructions that came with a new, 10-year battery, Kidde smoke detector.
It says do NOT used canned smoke, because if used improperly it can damage the detector / make it malfunction.
I started testing with canned smoke a few years ago, since it would show the sensors are working & not just the alarm.
What do you all do / think?

Just strike a match and put it out quickly next to the detector. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Actually, don’t you just have a “test” button you can push? --24.152.xxx.xx |

I just push the button. --209.205.xxx.xx |

DJ,
OUr Sec8 inspector would use canned smoke. The the FIre Marshall taught me the canned smoke coats the sensors, making it sound the alarm,
but now the sensors are "dirty" and less sensitive to a real fire.
Smoke is actually microscopic particles that can accumulate on a surface.
He said pushing the TEST button is sufficient.

PS
Our new city inspector did not know how to push the test button on a SD!
Yet they gave her a badge and the ability to fine LLs

Doesn’t surprise me at all that both inspectors were buffoons. --24.152.xxx.xx |

I just use the test button as well. I take the unit down and put it against my body to muffle the sound.
If you want to get really paranoid start wondering if the last time you tested the battery used enough juice that now it won't function properly.
I don't worry about that too much, but sometimes I like to share. --107.147.xx.xx |

Fun fact:
Using an electric planer on 150 yr old oak doors will cause the smoke alarms to go off. I ended up putting a shoe protector bootie over said hard wired detector whilst planing. --64.246.xxx.xx |
