Well, how about just because you want to? To retire, not grow. To not break your neck (LOL)
Last evening - I waited until closer to sunset so it was "only" 91, feels like 101 degrees - I climbed up on a roof to locate and fix a leak. I heard myself say out loud "I'm too old for this" several times. It just wasn't fun any more. It used to be. And I do still enjoy other DIY stuff - closer to the solid ground.
Now, this was my daughter's house, so that's different. I'll always help my kids however I can.
I just spent time in MN repairing my other daughter & SIL's porch. (it's now solid & looks nice : ).
But, I guarantee I'll not be doing any more roofing on a rental!

I had that same feeling last week. I still enjoy doing work on the rentals, mostly to keep me limber and burn some calories. In this case it was taking down a couple of large trees. Got them down, cut up, and dragging the whole mess out to the street where the city will haul it off. The whole time I was saying the same thing, "I'm too old for this".
Later in the week I identified another tree that needed to come down, I called a tree guy. Based on his quote I'm guessing I saved about $3,000 doing the first two myself but I'm not doing that again. --209.205.xxx.xx |

I stopped going way up on ladders a while ago. I even sold the 22’ ladder. A short one is just fine and if I can’t reach it means I need to call someone.

I don't do heights. Even at work, I get someone else to get the high things down on a ladder if I don't have the power equipment. Just a thing with me.

I believe when you are starting out, you should be doing 80% of the work yourself. As we progress, it gets tougher and tougher to do that. Part of that is wisdom and part of that is energy. 90 plus degrees and high humidity does not want to make me want to get up on the roof.
If you do decide to do this for your NEXT daughter, 6 AM is an awesome time to do that kind of work - not 8 PM. It is the labor of love, and madness.
BTW: Matt is trying to get a third ship in a row over in Japan. His dad (My cousin) has asked me to help him install metal roofs on his two duplexes down there. I am less than excited about visiting VA in the summer to help an extended family member fix one of his rentals....even if he is in the Navy in teh exact same field that i was in. --67.140.xx.xx |

I totally agree with teaching the next generation. However, this child is on the Autism spectrum - high up, but still...
Low muscle tone & poor coordination/balance is fairly common on the spectrum & she has that in spades. So, no way she's going on a roof! She did spend a whole year working with me to renovate her house - insulation, framing, drywall, windows, concrete, paint, etc. I still teach her as much as possible when things come up. --72.218.xx.xxx |

My own "I don't want to" threshold is pretty low so unless it's quick, simple and low risk, I'm hiring it out. I'm more inclined to DIY at my personal residence rather than a rental because there's less pressure to get to it immediately. I recently had a problem with some electrical outlets not working. As it turns out it was two faulty GFCIs. I learned a bit about what line, load, upstream and downstream meant and sorted out the issue. That probably common knowledge for many here, but I didn't know. I have the time to figure that out at home and live without the outlets not working until I do, but that's pressure in a rental, so I just hire. Why? Because I wouldn't be able to get to it immediately and I'd be fumbling around trying to sort the problem. --23.28.xx.xx |

GFCIs are easy now.
Try wiring in a four way switch next time.
First one I ever did was at my parent's place. Three way, no worries, four way and I had to scratch my head a bit. Couldn't get it to work. Kept trying. Kept getting frustrated. Before smart phones.
I went home and looked up diagrams. Even took a picture so I could check myself. Got back to the job and still no joy.
Turned out that the brand new 4 way switch was defective. I had it wired correctly but it was bad and I didn't know it. New switch worked like a charm and is still going strong in his living room. --107.147.xx.xx |

Roofing was the first thing that I gave up doing myself. Tough work, roof is the coldest place in Winter and the Hottest in Summer, dangerous, heavy lifting, and I was not that good at it. I did not have proper equipment so I could only apply cold roofs and they did not last long. --73.165.xxx.xxx |
