is there a way to provide power to thermostats from the heating system, so that it is not battery driven? If so, any tips on how to do that or specific brand/model would be appreciated. Not looking for anything fancy, like wifi...just a basic thermostat, maybe a programable that shows the time/temperature

My HVAC guy did that...I don't know how he did it however. I believe it was wired in somehow. Perhaps try you tube .com --75.11.xx.xx

Many HVAC units use a 24 volt transformer at the indoor unit to provide power to the thermostat. --73.2.xx.xx

Yeah, LOTS of systems already do this. Even my ancient 30+ year old system has this. The old thermostat (now a Google Nest) had a battery built in for backup when the power goes out -- but it was still powered most of the time from the furnace source.

You should go to the Google Nest compatibility checker site here:

store.google.com/intl/en/widget/compatibility/thermostat/

Walk through the steps -- marking the labeled wires that go into your current system. If it comes up as compatible, then you know that your system supplies power already.

Even if you don't go with a Google Nest, their compatibility checker will basically tell you if yours is compatible with most on the market today.

First consider install Tekmar electron boiler control system where get option for a indirect hot water tank so when the direct fired gas water is replaced install a stainless steel indirect hot water tank which heat loss in standby is less then one degree per hour. For radiators buy non electric locking thermostatic radiator valves such as Danfoss or Honeywell Brauckman.. Soldered or pipe into system. If the radiators are in serious where one heating loop then one thermostatic valve for each rental unit. The radiator works on the modulation principal where slowly opens and closes where sometimes will close completely. Locking is more expensive where tenant can not increase temperature. Unlike a traditional indoor and outdoor boiler control the Tekmar electronic boiler control absolutely does not increase temperature when a window is open forcing tenant to close window along with the warm weather shut down feature where a outside sensor connects to Tekmar electronic system where can set outside temperature the heating shuts and boiler pumps shut off during the warmer days and warmer nights in the spring and fall saving enough energy in less then one heating season to pay off the system. Again can more information about Tekmar electronic boiler systems, Danfoss non electric thermostatic radiators locking and Honey Brauckman non electric locking thermostatic radiator valves. Those products are mainly sold at plumbing supply outlets not the big box stores. A indirect hot tank is expensive but made of stainless steel will easily last up to 30 years along with less buildup of sediment as boiler temperature is a lot lower then direct fired hot water tanks. --216.110.xxx.xxx

A very cheap option is install pipe insulation in boiler room and basement where more heat goes up stairs. if there are copper finned radiators thoroughly clean with a air compressor and shop vac then install reflective tape behind and above fins putting more heat into room at a lower temperature. Lower the heating loop temperature by 10 to 20 degrees will produce considerable energy savings which the lowest cost for maximum results. A average direct fired water heater will lose 7 to 12 degrees per hour even when no hot water is required where a indirect hot water tank will lose less one degree per hour when no hot water is required. In the Eu countries no furnaces where a boiler and indirect hot water tank. Indirect hot tanks are set up for domestic hot water priority where the heat goes off for 10 to 20 minutes so the full boiler output is used where the room does not drop. A average indirect hot water tank produces two to three times the amount of hot water as the output is more kilo watts or Btu then a direct fired hot water tank. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Yes, but it is typically not as simple as just connecting the wire at the thermostat. It has to be connected on the other end too...

The "C" terminal is for common. Most, not all thermostats will run off the system power instead of the battery if this wire is connected at the thermostat AND at the air handler (where the 24 volt transformer typically resides). --74.222.xx.xx

If the C wire is connected to the CURRENT thermostat, then chances are good it is connected at the other end.

Google sells millions of these things. Pretty sure their "see if it will work and has power" process is likely pretty accurate. :)

Thermostats for forced air and boilers are completely different as once hot water is heated temperature does not change that much. With hot water radiant heat can control a zone or temperature of individual room. Also can limit heat with boilers and more with high efficiency gas boilers. --216.110.xxx.xxx
