Had a WHOA BABY moment today. We’ve had lots of those over the years. My occasional RE partner asked me to come help him and the electrician we use on a friends house today. House is a new purchase, an awesome 1 bedroom cabin with a loft in the middle of nowhere. We were running a wire for the bathroom above a plywood covered ceiling. Not sure why the original owners put plywood on the ceilings, but it’s easier to leave it there in this case. Electrician had a 5’ flexible drill bit for situations like this. Drilling across several joists over to the access point and then stick the ground wire through a hole in the pilot end of the drill bit and pull back the wire to where you need it. As I was feeding the wire to him and he was pulling, the ground wire came loose while he was tugging and all his energy knocked him off balance and off the ladder. 8’ down onto his face like a ton of bricks. Luckily he was fine but holy cow did he hit the ground hard. --24.152.xxx.xx

Do check on him for the next several days.

I once fell from an uncomfortable height onto the cement sidewalk below, also flat on my face. I was fine at the time; two and a half days later, i was not at all. My brain went bonkers and I had to be driven home as I was physically unable to. I had lost my sense of balance.

When doing physical labor, things can happen, quickly.

Not so much when yer paid to sit on yer office arse.

Lots of (true) horror stories out there.

Cheers to the ones that build / repair things !

Ha ha, that just reminded me of one time I was having a guy help me on a few houses and he was patching some siding on the end of a single-story ranch house. He was up near the peak which might’ve been 11 or 12 feet off the ground and I was on the other side of the house, and I hear him yell help. I ran around the house and he’s dangling from the peak with both hands and the ladders on the ground. I started laughing and just said hold on a second, I’ve got to get a picture of this. --174.240.xxx.xxx

I think he’s OK. I called him last night. After he stood up yesterday and we confirmed that he was all right, I told him one thing was for sure was that his face now looked a lot better than it did before he fell. He told me to shut up in not such a nice fashion. Haha --174.240.xxx.xxx

Yes, the mishaps happen in spite of your best effort to prevent them. Glad he's ok. It's interesting how you can take a big tumble like that and be ok sometimes and yet other times trip on your shoelaces and break your leg. I guess it's luck of the draw.

I was up on the top of a 30 foot extension ladder propped up against a tree this week trimming out a couple of dead limbs that had been bugging me. As I was doing it I was thinking how I don't bounce nearly as well as I did as a young man. I know a lot of guys give up their ladder at some point, I don't know that I will be one of them. I'd rather die doing something productive than sitting in front of a TV in a nursing home at a ripe old age trying to extend a miserable existence. --209.205.xxx.xx

I stopped getting on ladders.

Couple years ago I was golfing in my league with a Security System business owner. He said to me "I am doing a young man's job. I want to sell my business and carry the note. The payments will act as a pension. BUT first I have a couple large commercial contracts I need to complete."

Within 6 months of that conversion he fell off a roof. Died in the helicopter during the medi-vac. --198.168.xx.xxx

Had I been the one dangling, as soon as my feet were on the ground, one of us would have been going to the hospital shortly thereafter lol. --75.75.xxx.xxx

My last W2 I was a classed as an electrical mechanic. Fancy title, no extra pay.

Working in a big control cabinet while the machine was running so I could troubleshoot an issue. Head stuck in. 24 volt DC up to 480 volt AC all in the same cabinet.

Guy walks up behind me and screams. Fortunately I didn't fall into the cabinet. Unfortunately I didn't kick the guys butt back to the stone age. Instead I took a break.

There are times when goofing around is okay, then there are times like I just described. --107.147.xx.xx

One of the reasons I keep my maintenance tasks as simple as possible and hire out the rest. At my age, a fall like that can be catastrophic. When you're younger you can jump right back up and have at it, not so much when you're older. --172.56.xxx.xx

If I had fallen dead on my face at age 69, I might have been okay or I might not have been. Heck, you don't even need to be up on a ladder to have a nasty spill, but I chose the path of minimizing the risk. Just today, I was changing some smoke batteries and the tenant offered a step ladder which I declined in favor of my task ladder. Even for something like that, I prefer three points on contact on a ladder. --23.28.xx.xx

My granddad was trimming tree branches while standing on a roof and slipped.... bad injury.

I was having a roof redone = decided not to risk climbing two stories on the roofers ladder and put the ladder inside on linoleum, and take a look at the roof from inside (Plywood and roof removed). Apparently some dew or rain got on the linoleum or whatever and the ladder kicked back and I grabbed a 2x6 with one arm, which dislocated the socket. Weirdly enough, I probably would have only fallen 3 or 4 feet if I had just let go instead of the extreme pain of having your are pulled out.

Heard of a handyman in Missouri who was trimming tree branches from a ladder and fell - broke his back and became a paraplegic - no insurance . . . They had fundraisers to help pay his nursing home care .... --72.220.xxx.xxx
