Convention happenings (by Doogie [KS]) Posted on: Jun 9, 2025 8:09 PM

While at the convention this year, we had a TON of rain where I'm from. Friday night we had 60mph gusts of wind during that storm. We had a lot of rain the past couple weeks as well. The local lake was about 11 feet low for quite some time and gained 4 feet back in the last 2 weeks. Needless to say, the ground is totally saturated here.

Anyway while at convention, I also was informed that a huge tree at one of my houses split and fell from the windstorm. Not usually a big issue, but this time it definitely was. The branches of this ting are about 3 feet in diameter when veering off from the trunk. One of the branches fell on the neighbors detached garage. It took it from a pitched roof to a flat roof. The tree is not salvageable and it all must come down. The trunk is split in half and therefore will not survive. One guy has already bid it at $8500.

So, the convention was good. Enjoyed hearing all the speakers. Learned a few things I am in the process of incorporating into my business. It was BY FAR the most expensive convention that I have attended to date. Haha!

Landlording is not for the weak I guess.

the tree should not be your expense,it is the neighbors problem,he needs to turn it in to his insurance company --208.115.xxx.xx

I agree Ken. For that portion of it that landed on his house. However, the rest of the tree needs to come down. That expense is on me.

WMH - I agree with you as well. Timing on it totally was terrible though. --107.207.xx.xx

Ditto on weather in our home town. Trees are so expensive. I won't buy any more properties with trees. The last one cost me a year's rent ! We are currently dealing with another property, the only and last tree is split in half! Lucky not a big tree. Hope it's cheap! --172.56.xxx.xx

As a Tree Expert once said,

all trees are tested each and every time there's wind.

The wind on that particular day,

finally decided that trees fate.

It was only a matter of time.

Get multiple quotes. It isn't an emergency since your half of the tree is still standing.

I find tree cutters shadiness second only to roofers. --65.188.xxx.xxx

There is so many things you can control and put the rest of it into a higher power's hands.

What did I learn about 24 hours ago. There was a sky diving plane that went down in Tennessee with 20 people onboard. Four of those are still in the hospital.....my nephew, the army special warfare medic and self-proclaimed adrenaline junky was on that plane.

I really would like to smack the crap out of him, but I also know that he will still continue to want to jump. So I can only put that message into words that he might be able to relate to about military leadership and leading out front.

I am glad to hear that your situation along with my family members turned out in a good light, as both could be much worse. Does it make it any better loosing that perceived control. But the real issue is realizing, were we really ever in control to begin with? As for me smacking the crap out of the kid, it is Father's Day weekend ahead - I'll let his dad place a foot in his backside --98.17.xx.x

Wow Ray-N-Pa, that was something! So he survived? As far as trees, we live in the woods. We've had big ones go down across our drive and imprison us for a couple days. --216.126.xx.xxx

Ray I hope your nephew is okay!! What a terrible thing to happen.

Doogie, we had a landlord here have a tenant die recently due to a falling tree :( There's always someone who has it worse.

But yes, the expense is huge. We spent multiple multiple thousands last year on trees...and

We just sent off a request for a quote for removing four huge trees covered in vines, two are way too close to a house...luckily my daughter-in-law's father runs a tree company so we trust him as much as we can I guess. --72.82.xx.xx

Roughly 1/3 of the 20 folks onboard were military doing jumps during their days off. So when they heard prepare for a hard landing, they knew what to do. Last I heard there were no deaths but there are some serious bruised bananas

Lets apply some lessons from that mishap. Most everyone at the convention was not a rookie. They know what needs to get done......so why does it scare people to implement change?

Well its the change.

FWIW - nephew has a case of whiplash. He wants to go back up as soon as he can.

I was told that on take off one of the two engines crapped out. Now when that happens you do an emergency landing and lift the wing on the engine that isn't working. Lifting that wing causes additional lift.

Well the pilot panicked and lowered the wing because of the location of the landing strip. He wanted the fastest way to it vs the way with most lift.......so he forced the plane down. He did well trying to recover from the mistake. --98.17.xx.x

Everyone that I have known personally who dive are hooked on it.

Whether they be military or not.

My gutter guy has spent years trying to talk me into going up. I just never have taken him up on the offer. Not that I am afraid, it just isn't high on the list.

Now with the crash I am sure my boss will do all she can to veto the idea.

Happy to hear that no loss of life happened.

Keep your foot to yourself, your nephew might readjust it for you. --107.147.xx.xx

The rule is that, regardless of whose tree it is, everybody is responsible for what happens on their side of the property line. Everybody involves their own insurance company (or does their own work) to clean up and/or repair their own property. There is no retribution against the property owner where the tree was growing from. UNLESS the tree was diseased and in danger of coming down more easily than a healthy tree AND you cn prove the owner knew it was diseased but did nothing about it.

Proof is usually that you notified the tree owner in writing or text photo or whatever that the tree is deseased or otherwise compromised. THEN, the owner of the tree and/or their insurance carrier must pay. I had that very situaltion last year where the neighbor had actually expressed to me that they needed to take down some trees. When one of their trees blew down and damaged my house (and they had not yet done anything about the tree), their insurance paid for it. My insurance carrier was never even informed of the event. --184.56.xx.xxx
