Rent Assistance Programs (by Q [NE]) Posted on: Jun 5, 2025 5:06 PM Message:
I have a close family friend who is on disability due to aspergers. He gets government assistance, but would be unable to afford rent. I would like to help him out. What programs are available to him or to landlords to help subsidies his rent payment. We live in Nebraska.
Thanks for any help. --174.228.xx.xx |

Section 8 - a rent voucher program - is a rent subsidy program for low-income and disabled people. What it is called in your area, I don't know.
If it works for him will depend first on where he lives as the program is federally funded but administered locally. --173.28.xx.xxx |

Don't get involved. I can see why you would but it will get messy. Somehow you won't do "enough" or you will steer them the wrong way. You can collect agencies and thier numbers but pass it on, don't become a liason. --73.230.xxx.xx |

Do a google search for disable group home. There is probably an organization near you that manages group homes to support people in these situations. There are different level of group homes, some with full time staff, others with only monitoring. They also tend to place clients based on their needs, in this case sensory challenges. You will probably have to work with their legal guardian. --209.205.xxx.xx |

Getting market rent is always the best option where a rental unit or house is a money pit that requires constant repairs and renovations where every month have to put money aside for that. You can not reduce rent then include utilities with that where will always have very utility bills. Government rentals can operate at a loss where sometimes it can a thousand or more dollars a month where a private sector rental housing provider can not do that. Here once have 100 per cent equity it is better to sell then invest in the market where unlike rentals no additional money is required every month. Most jurisdictions vacancy rates do not exist or at one per cent where objective is make a profit not operate at a loss. My experience with government supported rental units is often get a lower quality tenant where most have issues then in few years they move into government owned rental units. Separate utilities will keep rent lower along with screening out problem tenants who have unpaid utility bills. Unpaid utility bills and unpaid rent go hand together. Again if consider must run a thorough credit check on all adult applicants where in the province of Ontario a credit score of seven hundred and above or you keep looking. In the low four hundreds they usually have a unstable rental history. It is business not a charity where have to maintain at least break even. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I’m sorry to say that eventually you will regret helping anyone out, especially if they are a close family friend, or family, disabled individual, or not. At some point in the future, it will bite you in the rear end. Instead, this person is likely to have a social worker who can help with programs that are available. Keep business separate from personal. I learned a hard lesson, and sure, it feels great to help someone out and people are so thankful but it can and will, quickly or not so quickly, turn sour. --99.117.xxx.xx |

In NJ each county has a subsidized housing / section 8 program. There is also a separate state program. In my county there are 21 municipalities and the single largest of these also has a separate sect 8 program.
These are all subsidized by HUD but separately and independently administered.
My county also has a social services office (formerly know as welfare). Might be best to start there.
You're a good person for caring and may wish to limit your involvement as some here have suggested.
Good luck --76.117.xxx.xxx |
