A tenants rent check bounced. This has never happened before. Bank says I need to get a new check.
Should I ask for a certified check or cashiers check? Thank you for your responses.

Absolutely make them pay with certified funds (or cashapp, venmo, etc) and combine that with a NSF check fee and a late fee. Wallet training will keep it from becoming a habit. --130.41.xxx.xx |

I would take a certified check or money order, not another personal check. Give them a deadline in your state to make it good and then if it’s not, take that bounced check to the police. It’s probably criminal. Let them know you will be going to the police if they don’t make it good immediately. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Since this is the only bounced check you have ever gotten maybe you should see why it bounced?
Was it blatant or a one time mishap?
I do not take checks any longer, but I have had a tenant drop one at the bank and it bounced. That was a sign. I followed up and realized they were trying to buy time so I moved forward with eviction because of it.
You need to have your lease cover what happens with this. If you are still comfortable with accepting checks then be positive that they know you will move forward with solving the problem.
Congrats on never having a bounced check before. --107.147.xx.xx |

The problem was solved rather quickly. I texted him, knew he was at work. I told him to include the $50 late fee. I asked him if his bank had Zelle; he checked as we texted. It did, I gave him my transfer info to him and he sent it was in my bank within seconds.
My bank doesn’t charge nsf fees so I didn’t charge him one. I could in the future, (preparing for the unexpected) what is a reasonable fee to charge for an nsf check, or would you not if there wasn’t an nsf charged to you? --75.11.xx.xx |

My NSF check fee is $30 to cover the bank's fee and my trouble. --184.56.xx.xxx |

Pretty sure that my state only allows $25 for NSF, which is what the bank charges.
Again tho, I only have one person that pays with a check. He is the investor buying the property.
Happy it all got cleared up so fast.
Wish my CU would allow Zelle. --107.147.xx.xx |
