The 4 x 8 sheets at Lowes of white board (lumpy/bumpy), seems waterproof. You see it in convenience store bathrooms.
We have an older block house that had a not really waterproof board around the tub. (It is crumbling) Would buy a regular surround but this house has a window in the shower! So, we need something to cut to fit.
Do any of you use this? It is about 43.00 a sheet. I think it has trim to match. We'll still probably put a rod and shower curtain on the inside of the outside wall to protect the window. I know it's weird, but it works. --216.126.xx.xxx |

It works but will look like a convince store bathroom. I have a trailer house with these walls in the shower no problems along as the caulk is good --96.43.xxx.xxx |

Lumpy/Bumpy seems like a housekeeping headache. WMH has posted what she uses---I believe PVC sheets with no texture, but it's been discussed on here before. --130.41.xxx.xx |

Paint the windowglass black on the inside. Then use 2x4's cut to size to fill the void. Then put a surround over the whole thing. I like the 5-piece glue-ups that used to be $100 at HD, with the built-in-shelves, but those are getting harder to find, so sometimes I have to escalate to the $200 glue-ups. --137.118.xx.xxx |

We don't use the smooth PVC - it looks kind of cheap and trailer-y. We use PVC wainscoting. A lot more expensive but easy to put up, easy to cut, water-proof without caulk even. It's 8 foot long so either goes to the ceiling or is a foot shorter.
DH would cover that window, line it with more PVC, and make it an alcove with PVC or glass shelves for shampoo etc. --173.28.xx.xxx |

It's called FRP - Fiberglas Reinforced Plastic.
It was made famous in NC by Hardees Restaurants. Appears to be the only material to stand up to urinal stalls in men's bathrooms.
I used it in my rooming house and would not hesitate to install in a class C unit. --136.61.xx.xxx |

If the room has a fan, eliminate the window. We are even adding fans. If you decide to keep the window we had had excellent success using plastic wood trim. Then I add a tension rod and a $1 shower curtain cut to size for easy daily usage. Either way this area is coming back clean and ready in-between tenants. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

Get rid of the window. No one wants a freezing cold window in their shower in the winter, no one wants someone looking into their shower from the outside. Install a ventilation fan that it wired with the ceiling light.

That stuff will work fine in a low-rent type place.
Avoid seams except the corners, and use PVC trim around the windows.
Either just caulk the vertical corners & along the tub or glue & caulk in some PVC inside corner trim for a little nicer look.
Instead of a tension bar the full width, you can use a regular, metal curtain rod hung a little higher & a little wider than the window - hang your window curtain made from a piece of shower curtain from that.
I'm thinking a full shower curtain all the way across the back wall might hide some mildew behind it and make them less likely to look & clean behind it. Plus, a curtain just on the window may look better. --72.218.xx.xxx |

The best solution is remove everything then clean up where install spray foam or solid board insulation then install 1/4” hardi board then install large porcelain white tiles where a quick wipe along will last a long time where easy to clean. Conditions in rental units or houses can change where we all know the girl friend or wife makes the final say where the kitchen and bathroom are the most important. When there are high vacancy rates then easy to rent during a recession. I find shopping at the Habitat for Humanity restores where can pick quality tiles. Some cities have a few stores where can buy good quality ceramic or porcelain tiles along with faucets, paint, light fixtures including ceiling fans, plumbing supplies, power tools and commercial grade locks. If you like something take it as short time later gone. A cheap bathroom is difficult to clean where first time had seen a tub surround it was dirty along leaked where the green board dry wall was damaged. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I used it for a 4' long tub, which meant no seams. Looked way better than the vintage pink tile it replaced. Held up great. Raised no eyebrows in my urban neighborhood. --104.230.xxx.xxx |

We used to put FRP in commercial kitchens. Mostly Pizza Huts. The grade of the material was much better than what Lowes carries now. Stronger, more crack resistant and nearly bulletproof.
The adhesive for it was extremely flammable.
I have considered using it on the ceiling above a shower. I did one ceiling with tile but I always worry the washer above it will either shake it loose or leak and make it all fall down.
I prefer surrounds if they are solidly built. I started tiling inside the tub area and not even putting alcoves for stuff. Might do that for the kid's place when I get back from holiday.
Last window in a shower area got covered over. Not sad about doing that at all. Old window still outside because it is a brick place, but you can't see in and you don't get the build up that causes mildew. --107.147.xx.xx |

I am doing as Deanna said on my current rehab, with some small changes. I painted the window white. I put foam insulation over the lower sash, which happened to be two-thirds of the window space, piece of plywood over that. The tub surround kit will be cut to fit around the upper sash, so natural light can still get in bathroom. Already have a Panasonic fan wired to the light. I’ll cut a piece of acrylic or plexiglass to go over the upper sash, just for additional noise insulation. Because the upper sash is so small, and so high up, I won’t need the shower curtain over the window; the large lower sash is entirely behind tub surround.
If you have ever showered in a tub with shower curtain over the window, you know they stick to your bum while you shower ( heat+ moisture = bum magnet) unless fastened to the wall at the sides/bottom.
Like Robin, I have used the pebble board on a shower stall in a C class rental with good results. Cleans up with Mr. CLean magic eraser, somewhat easier than the rest of the old, existing five piece surround. I’d definitely use it ‘in a pinch.’ Well I did. Replace the worn plumbing fixture end with pebble board to buy some time before I have to tackle tearing that entire shower surround out and re-doing insulation, drywall et cetera. --172.59.xx.xx |

Bum magnet means something different around these parts.
Thanks for the laugh tho, and I agree with you as well. --107.147.xx.xx |
