Cases Closed: At least 115 fair housing cases have been halted or closed, according to HUD officials, some of whom fear race-based cases could be the next category abandoned.
Resources Slashed: HUD’s Fair Housing Office is set to lose a third of its staff, and it’s now nearly impossible to spend money on investigations. “We are being gutted,” an official said.
Defendants Emboldened: Some accused of wrongdoing are ignoring HUD, and one public housing authority rescinded a settlement offer with the agency, according to officials.
Asked to comment on the findings in this story, HUD spokesperson Kasey Lovett said in a statement: “HUD is committed to rooting out discrimination and upholding the Fair Housing Act. ProPublica continues to cherry pick examples to further an activist narrative rather than report the facts.” The White House did not respond to a request for comment. --72.220.xxx.xxx |

Part of Trump's HUD plan is to eliminate the section-8 program. He wants to give block grants to the states and let them do it. --162.204.xxx.xxx |

I heard Vivek say that many government programs and whole agencies were started with all the best intentions and to serve real problems of the day. THAT day. Back in the past.
But once the problem was resolved, legislated away, or society itself evolved, the agency charged with solving the original problem is never dissolved, so it has to find new problems to work on...resulting in disasters like the DOE, the EPA, HUD and FHA, etc. Some 400+ government agencies looking for something to do.
He is so right. Fair Housing rules and laws were needed - back in the day. But laws and rules were established and the issues have largely disappeared from society.
So now they have to go out hunting for law-breakers, like Elmer Fudd hunting wabbits.
As someone said, our laws are so convoluted that every day, every American is committing a felony without knowing it.
Time to get rid of these dinosaur agencies. --173.28.xx.xxx |

As Dennis Block says, there are plenty of anti-harassing the tenant laws which almost never occur, but on the other hand, there are no anti-harassing the landlord laws although that occurs all the time. Landlords have been brutally murdered by tenants.
It's time to gut all these programs and Institute some landlord protections --64.246.xxx.xx |

I see a lot of crying about government being downsized. How people are losing their jobs. How bad it is. I do sympathize, but only a little. The private sector goes through this all the time. I myself have been laid off TWICE. Once in 2009 and again in 2019. The first time there was approx 2000 people that left and it was also the 4th round of cuts. The second time there was approx 250 that left. There was no outcry then. The company was doing what it had to do in order to survive. They were spending more than they were making. Plain and simple, dollars and cents.
Now with the government, it's the same but factored up EXPONENTIALLY! This has gone on for so long that instead of just reducing a few workforce, we have to reduce entire departments. It's not a choice. Those of us old enough saw what the USSR went through in the 80's. It'll happen here as well. Just a matter of time. Even though we are making major cuts, we STILL are spending more than we're taking in. It's simply unsustainable.
I do also have to side with what WMH said about looking for problems so an agency can keep it's job. CA seems to be the worst offender of behavior like this as well (IMO). Can't say I'm sorry to read the above. The LL is always painted as the villain. Way more tenants then LL's, so it's much easier to villainize them and still win elections. Media doesn't help much in this area either. It's no wonder people are moving out of CA in droves. Just hate they are bringing their stupid policies with them. --107.207.xx.xx |

I know that I will watch what happens and any of my congress critters that vote for more gov will get my negative vote.
Every little bit of authority becomes a little bit of power. That power can easily become an addiction. Then the problems start for real. --107.147.xx.xx |

The guy who is taking over DOGE apparently has been working on things the entire time - they had 100 days to get some things done that will last beyond executive order. Categorization of certain employees for instance, so they CAN be fired. --173.28.xx.xxx |

WMH, I agree with you completely regarding bureaucratic federal agencies.
