Weird Washer Question (by WMH [NC]) Posted on: May 12, 2025 10:47 AM

Front Loader.

Found a packet of washer cleaner. Wondered why I had it, perhaps it came with the machine years ago. I don't know why you need to wash a washer that is filled with water and soap regularly but I had it, I had a moment and tried it. Put it in my washer and hit "Self-Clean" which I have never used because I don't know what it does, but I assume it's to do with the washer itself and not clothes.

Forgot about it.

This morning I opened the washer and it looked funny. I reached in and the entire drum was covered with a brown almost chunky film of some sort. Closed it and put it on quick clean on extra hot. Now the drum is shiny and clean.

Wonder what that stuff was????

Did the cleaner do that, or did the Self-Clean function? Has anyone tried a washer cleaner, or the self-clean function?

Any ideas?

Sounds like it was moldy soap residue. --47.159.xxx.xxx

mmm I don't think so. Didn't look or smell at all like soap OR mold. I am running it to see if it happens again. --173.28.xx.xxx

Our new front loader washing machine has the self cleaning feature, it did come with any printed user manual. I've never tried it! One day I'll read up on that feature. I would assume it's just build up of soap and lint. Do you by chance wear and wash a lot of fleece fabric? --172.59.xxx.x

Many of the Front Load Washers have a door gasket that retains water. Unless you leave he washer door open when not in use, or use a rage to dry the gasket, your washer will grow MOLD! That is want the washer special cleaner is for. --47.155.xx.xxx

High efficiency washing machines use so little water that they won’t clean themselves of mildew and mold. Your clothes smell soured, and most folks lay on the febreeze scented soaps to counteract. The washing machine cleaners are needed to keep the washing machine clean , but your clothes will still be dirty as they’re simply not enough water to rinse them.

The president has proposed to repeal this EPA regulation. Make America clothes clean again! --149.76.xxx.x

The self cleaning ovens leave a residue on the oven racks. My guess is that this is something very similar. --166.181.xx.xx

Try running the machine with a hot water high spin cycle. Another option is use cleaning vinegar which can be bought at most stores. Always open door after each wash also consider cleaning filter on drain where some machines have a access door and other machines have to remove bottom panel as a clogged filter will prevent complete draining. A front load washing machines uses 40 per cent less water than a top load washing machine. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Marcia, your are not supposed to leave the rakes in the oven when using the self cleaning mode. Remove the racks when self cleaning. --172.59.xxx.xx

Thanks for that tip Plenty, but the whole oven inside had residue on it after using the self clean feature. So strange. --75.11.xx.xx

It's suppose to have like a gray white chair like power, after self clean cools one is to wipe that off. The reason the racks are to be removed is because this feature effects the finish on the racks and instead of smoothly sliding in and out the will be dull and hard to slide in and out. It's like your universal remote control for your TV doesn't actually control the universe! Self clean doesn't mean you don't have to wipe it after it cools. Participate. And we've totally high jacked the Weird washing machine thread! --172.59.xxx.xxx
