HVAC question for the board.
No heat coming on.
Goodman Model GPG1324070M41AD Serial 1111563609
This is a package unit with gas heat.
We had a 4.1 level earthquake here yesterday. Very unusual for this area. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.
I have tenants moving in this week so of course it happens now. The current outside temperature is around 62 degrees. The temperature in the house is 70 degrees. Not really necessary to run either heat or A/C but want to make sure everything is working. As I was speaking to the neighbor, he mentioned that his heat was out and thus I wanted to check mine. Well, my unit does not seem to be working properly either.
I turned on the heat to 74 degrees. The thermostat set and called for heat. Outside, at the unit, the exhaust fan comes on and runs but the heat is not coming on, thus the exhaust fan kicks off and calls off the gas. The heat never comes on.
I shut the thermostat completely off. Then I turn the thermostat to cool at 69 degrees to see if the A/C comes on. The cool on light flashes on and off but the A/C does not come on. I just had the A/C on at 71 degrees on Thursday while going over the house for move-in checklist and it was fine. Not sure if it would normally come on at 69 degrees or not but it is not at this point.
I am hoping to be able to fix this myself. I typically DIY as much as possible, and I have tested and replaced capacitors on a HVAC unit before. I have also removed the fan motors, taken them apart and oiled the pads on my own like unit before, so I am sure that I could fix this myself with some guidance on what to check and how to knowledge.
What do I need to test and what is the best way to test it?
Thank you for your time and knowledge. --73.19.xxx.xx |

I DIY a lot and have a simple Flow chart for diagnosing HVAC systems. #1. Does it have power? Yes. Proceed to #2. #2. Does it have fuel? Yes. Proceed to # 3. #3. Call the pros. --24.152.xxx.xx |

A common problem is the device in the burners which is a thermocouple which generates current that opens gas valve. If defective there may not be sufficient current to open gas valve. Sometimes cleaning will work where it is better to replace. View some video on You tube on when burner does fire. Another problem is there no glow where you see it does not come on which heats the thermocouple. Remember this is safety as the gas valve will not open unless the two steps confirm the burners will ignite --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I have a similar unit at my house. I had a similar problem. The board flashing error code said bad inducer motor. I pulled it myself, easy replacement. New motor cost just under $200. --136.61.xx.xxx |

I don’t see a reset button anywhere.
The light on the circuit board was not flashing.
I had left the fan on for a while to circulate in the house. When I came back over here the temperature in the house was at 72. I turned the fan back on automatic. Turned the A/C on to cool down to 70. The A/C works fine.
I turned off the A/C and turned off the thermostat. Turned the breaker off, waited a few seconds and turned back on. Turned the thermostat back on to heat and set at 76 degrees. Went outside to unit and it is doing the same as before in that it is calling for heat but the heat doesn’t come on. While it was calling for heat I turned the in line gas valve off and back on and even in between. I could hear the igniter trying to light the gas but it never ignited it. Of course after a minute or two when it doesn’t light the gas it turns off and stays off. Now the light on the circuits board is flashing 1 time about every 3 seconds. Doesn’t seem to be any pattern other than that. Not sure if it is because I cut the gas off for a second. --174.212.xx.xxx |

One flash means Ignition error or flame failure. This could be due to a faulty ignitor, poor gas pressure, or inadequate airflow. The only commonality between your system and the neighbor is the gas supply. Have you verified the utility is on? --75.75.xxx.xxx |

I just tried it again and get the same thing. I went around to look at the gas meter to see if it looked like gas was going through. There is an old stile odometer type reading and then there are 2 dials like a clock but nothing is moving. I am going to turn the gas valve to what I believe is the off position and try again. --174.212.xx.xxx |

You probably won't see the meter moving until the gas is actively being fired. Personally, if there was a shutoff valve nearby, I'd break the line off the unit and purge it. This would also tell you whether or not you're getting gas and not just air. That being said, don't do anything you aren't comfortable with.
The unit will tell you what the problem is nine times out of ten. Do you see a spark from the ignitor? The exhaust doesn't have a bird/wasp nest in it does it?
I've had one unit fail to light 5 or so years after the original installation because the installers undersized the exhaust vent and the pressure switch must have been right on the edge. After I changed the exhaust pipe to the proper size, it's been working ever since. --75.75.xxx.xxx |

One thing I just thought of. Normally if the heat comes on and I am standing in front of the house where the meter is I can hear the hissing of gas going through the meter. I am not hearing that right now.
Would the gas still pull through the meter while it is trying to ignite?
I would think it would be.
The utilities offices are closed for the weekend so I will have to wait till Monday to call them to see if for some reason they cut off the gas. --174.212.xx.xxx |

What kind of gas igniter does it use? There's the capacitive discharge type that will cause a spark - (with this style, you should hear a tick - tick - tick sound), and there's a hot coil type igniter that will glow orange before the gas will come on.
If you're right and your gas isn't coming on, it's usually because there's a problem with your igniter. --73.2.xx.xx |
HVAC question (by 6x6 [TN]) Posted on: May 11, 2025 2:49 PM Message:
I pulled the other panel off where the igniter is. There is a round small switch of some type that has 2 pink wires going to it. I pushed on those wire connections to make sure they were tight. I reset the thermostat and tried again and it ignited and the heat came on. I should find out what that switch is called. It felt a little loose to so I will tighten up the sheet metal screw holding it in place.
Thank you everyone very much.
Thank you Jason.

These look to be 2 metal rods in ceramic that sparked.
There are3 burners but 2 ignitors. One on the top burner and one on the bottom. --174.212.xx.xxx |

That's most likely the pressure switch that verifies the exhaust pressure is where it needs to be. If it didn't happen to be a loose or corroded termination, that pressure switch being open would be telling you there's an obstruction of some kind in the exhaust. --75.75.xxx.xxx |

Some natural gas uses a spark ignition where other use a glow bar system that gets red hot. The flame rod sensor will generate current where the gas valve will not open. If there forced vent where the exhaust is induced by fan then will hear the fan running along with checking air flow at exhaust there are pressure switches where there must be sufficient air flow where check exhaust for obstructions which will cause inadequate air flow. Power vented equipment must have enough air flow to cause gas valve to open. Sometimes there is something that is obstructing that air flow where check to see with hand there is adequate air flow. A bird or other object can be in exhaust pipe. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I believe the Goodman has an LED light on the inside of it. If it is flashing RED, count the number of strobes. On the back of the front cover there will be a table that will get you pointed in one of seven or eight fault areas. --67.140.xx.xxx |

Since you are going now I would still watch for the same problem.
Did the little metal piece have a very tiny button on it, usually red? You might have reset it with that button and not even known it.
I guess the quake could have caused something to move enough to break connection, but that seems odd.
Either way you have it going now. Test it off and on a few more times before the tenants move in and hope for the best. --107.147.xx.xx |

Thank you everyone.
When placing my hand at the exhaust it seems to be working fine but I don't have any device to read it with. Plus there is a metal vent and screen on the unit case as this is all outside and so there is no PVC vent pipe.
Just glad I was able to get it going again even though winter is over here. I will check it again as well. --73.19.xxx.xx |
