Pex adapter failure (by NE [PA]) Posted on: May 10, 2025 3:28 PM Message:
This is the first! I just got a call from a tenant that he had water on the floor in his bathroom. Went over to check it out and I could hear a faint hissing of water, but I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. I thought for some strange reason, maybe the stainless steel nipple was loose, so I put my pipe wrench on it just to give it a little, snug and water trickled out from inside the wall. I thought that was odd, so I took my trustee multi tool and cut out a square just above the shut off valve so I can access the pex line. I barely touch the pex line and it was completely loose. The pex stem portion on the drop ear / lug L adapter Inside the wall completely dissolved off of the adapter. I rebuilt the connection and cut the pex back about an inch and the stem was still inside the pex inside the crimped connection. Heading back on Monday to do some spackling now. --174.240.xxx.xxx |

NE, I just posted a question about pex and mice. I think you are fairly rural. Have you had any issues with mice? --73.149.xx.xxx |

No never any mice problems or any other problems with pex except this adapter failure today. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Old Style Pex Adapter's have a failure rate over 15%. Even some of the new ones. Installer error or faulty fittings. This is way Copper is superior. --47.155.xx.xxx |

I have easily installed thousands of pex fittings by this point. If the failure rate was 15%, it would be on the news in my area. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Failure rate during the beginning of the product day view. First was the failure of the clamps, then the tool and then the fittings. --47.155.xx.xxx |

I have had one crimp fitting fail. Unfortunately it was on the main line under an apartment. No clue why it would fail as it was not in an area that got hit by anything, no direct sunlight, crimp ring was fine.
Heard the hissing and crawled under to see it. I shut the main off, cut it out and replaced it with new. I did not install it originally. Put in in 2001 and failed probably around 2019.
I called it a one off.
Interesting about NE's failure. --107.147.xx.xx |

I've had the cinch rings fail several times years ago. I switched over to crimp rings and assuming it was put together right and survived the initial pressure test, I've never had one fail. --209.205.xxx.xx |

There were problems with some of the fittings on the earlier fittings. I heard or read that years ago.
Was this type B crimp ring?
I have normally been using type B crimp ring and have had no problem if I get it done correctly. I have never trusted the cinch ring. However, type A with the expansion ring is said to be the best. In the future, I will probably use type A as I like how much easier it is for a one man show. --73.19.xxx.xx |

There are two types of pex which are A type made by Uponor commercial grade and B type sold at the big stores where the fittings the inside diameter is less then the diameter of the pex pipe. Contractors use A type which bends more easily along less likely to fail. Once you have special expansion tool which is expensive to buy around $500 dollars the cost is about the same where it is easier to install A type pex piping the B type pex piping. View some videos on You Tube about using A type commercial grade pex. Not everything sold at the big box are the best products. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

NE is the water high mineral content? Sounds like it wasn't the crimp? what fastening system are you using, rings, oteker clamps or upinor? I've, noticed what looks like deterioration on brass coated firlttings in a radiant heat system, but still good after 12 years. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

Small potatoes, it wasn’t the crimp. It was the barbed pex stem on the adapter itself. Just dissolved right off. --24.152.xxx.xx |

The only place I've had a pex (I only use the expansion type) was on a condensate pump line from a NG boiler. It just solved the metal over years. I switched to a plastic connection in this location and no problems since. Is this public or well water? --174.60.xxx.xxx |

I religiously use the brass fittings in lieu of the plastic because I thought they would be more durable. It's not relevant for a drop-ear elbow, but going forward I may need to reconsider using plastic fittings. --165.85.xxx.xxx |

I use PexB fittings. Crimp more than cinch.
Recently I purchased a PexA battery tool and the different heads for it. The plan is to eat thru all my B stuff and make the switch. Problem is getting to that point.
Working on plumbing in my latest flip house and needed a fitting that I was out of. Didn't want to make a switch mid job to PexA so I bought more B fittings.
PexA gets better flow, bends and expands better and the fittings end up being cheaper I guess. The only thing I have heard about PexA that was bad was it might leech more. Chems in the water supply might cause early failures as well.
I installed a pressure tank in an apartment a few months back. I cut the pex and removed a couple fittings. City water. Been in there since 2001. Fittings showed no problems. Same area where I had the odd failure a few years back. --107.147.xx.xx |
