I know a lot of you use pex vs copper. Are you concerned with mice chewing through? Have you had any bad experiences with pex not lasting? --73.149.xx.xxx

I had a girlfriend who's ice maker and refrigerator door water dispense went from under the kitchen sink filter system to the refrigerator via a 1/4" copper tubing. Every time the ice maker called for "water", the copper tubing would jump, causing the owners dog to attack.

But one day the dog was left in the parents kitchen with tile flooring as the family left for a family meeting. The parents had a clear plastic 1/4" water line to provide water to the refrigerator freezer. When that ice maker needed filling, the clean plastic line jumped and the dog attached that line. With the dogs teeth it snapped the plastic line in two. In the next 5 hours the water leak/damage exceeded $100,000. The parents had to move out and it took months to remediate/repair everything.

One little dog and 3 stupid adults equals months of discomfort and insurance claims. --47.155.xx.xxx

I plucked the following off of an IFAN website (they sell plumbing supplies):

Case Studies: Real-World Observations

Several case studies have been conducted to observe the interaction between mice and PEX piping. In one study, a household with a history of mouse infestations transitioned from copper to PEX piping. Over a six-month period, there was no reported increase in gnawing activity on the PEX pipes, despite the continued presence of mice in the home. This indicates that PEX piping does not exacerbate rodent problems and may even be less susceptible to damage compared to other materials.

Prevention Measures: Protecting PEX Piping

Although PEX pipes are inherently resistant to mouse chewing, proactive measures can further safeguard the system. Installing PEX pipe in enclosed, inaccessible areas can minimize the risk of gnawing. Additionally, using rodent-proof insulation and barriers around pipes can provide an extra layer of protection. For example, wrapping PEX pipes with steel mesh or rodent-resistant tape can deter even the most determined mice.

Long-Term Durability and Cost-Effectiveness

The durability of PEX pipe, combined with its resistance to rodent damage, makes it a cost-effective choice for plumbing systems. Unlike materials like copper, which can be extensively damaged by mice, PEX pipes retain their structural integrity over time. This long-term resilience reduces the need for frequent repairs and replacements, translating to lower maintenance costs. In residential and commercial settings, the economic benefits of using PEX pipe are significant, especially in areas prone to rodent infestations. --162.204.xxx.xxx

The mice have throughly had field day with our pex pipes. As soon as we fix one leak it opens up another. We are on day 9 of replacing and fixing with new pex and shark bites. We live in the country so mice are a constant issue. We will be wrapping the pipes with garbage bags that are rodent resistant, putting cinnamon brooms under there along with spraying tomcat and traps. I hope this helps. We are in a 1500 sq double wide and had to remove all the insulation so that has to be replaced. --143.105.xx.xxx

I have had no Pex vs mice problems at all.

Last month I did have my first problem with dezincification tho.

Brass tee sprung a leak. Now I am more than worried about all the Pex I put in over the years. Never used the plastic fittings as I worried they would not last.

Oops. --71.46.xxx.xx

Still Learning, I've been using Pex A for domestic water & heating line for years without any issues from rodents. IMO an added bonus is that I've never had anyone break into a building to steal Pex like I've had with copper pipes. --71.174.xx.xx
