We have a property that will be vacant for a couple months. Doing some much needed spiffing up of the house. Does anyone recommend any security camera systems? We won’t have WiFi at the property as it will be vacant, but want to keep an eye on the house for the mean time. Any suggestions? Going with a wired company installed cam system seems overkill. Also want to avoid the Amazon WiFi subscription systems. --104.28.xx.x |

I purchased from Amazon a Camtrix Magnetic Mini Security Camera, 2024New Camtrix Security Camera, Mini 1080p HD Wireless Magnetic Security Camera, Camtrix Camera with App, CamTrix WiFi Wireless Small Video Camera (3pcs) $17 for 3 of them.
I used my neighbors WiFi network, pay them $20 a month for the use.
Caught kids from the block breaking into the Garage, kicked in the wooden hinged door. Braking a window to enter the house. They cracked a toilet causing a major flood/mold. Took a new refrigerator, turned it on the side and pissed in it.
I took the footage to the police and they wouldn't lift a finger. The parents told me to f off. So I took a friends crane and put something into their pool.
Now they know what violation feels like. --47.155.xx.xx |

Ted - I just use a trail cam but I live out in more rural areas. Most everyone carries here - Crime and fiction writers are not a threat --50.96.xx.xxx |

There have been a few posts lately about cams with no wifi.
Do a search and get some good information.
For my places with no wifi I have Simplisafe. No cameras tho, but $22/mo for peace of mind.
I also have a Spypoint trail cam. You can (used to) get 100 free pics per month for free. I pay $120 a year and get unlimited pictures. Not video but still shots that are pretty good. Plus it is mobile.
Have not tried to ask to piggyback off of the neighbor's wifi. That could work as long as they are not worried you will go to bad places and they get in trouble for it. --107.147.xx.xx |

I would suggest buying a MiFi cell wifi modem so that you can keep an eye on the place remotely. A six/seven figure investment is worth the small monthly cost. --137.83.xxx.xx |

I use Eufy S120 cams that look like exterior lighting so not very obvious as a cam. They are solar so you have to think about placement somewhat. I connect them to Roam Wifi hot spots.
We had a problem with trespassing, cut throughs and someone stole a large trash toter until I put them up and set the alarm. Then WOO HOO the fun began!
NO ONE sets foot on the property anymore! --64.246.xxx.xx |

See this recent thread:

Do you just need images or do you need video? Do you need to see it from remote or just when you get back to the camera? Do you need alerts of motion while you aren't there?
Lots of things to be answered before you could figure out what to get when you don't have WiFi available.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Robert J - Yikes! Those neighborhood kids really made a mess. That cam system and paying for the neighbors WiFi paid off. I don’t know the neighbors yet, so I ant to explore other ways first. But good back up. Ray - trail cam sufficient for suburban/urban you think? John - alerts good, images are fine. Videos don’t often show more (faces usually blocked I hear). If it’s comparable in price, video best of course… mapleaf - you have a siren that goes off when trespassers cross the property? Could be worthwhile. I was looking at the eufy cans. Pricey per camera, but no subscription needed… zero and Jason - simplisafe, spy point trail can, and mifi cell are all s’things I will look into. --172.226.xxx.xxx |

Ted,
Our best defense is to super secure the building and remove anything worth stealing - NO tools/ladders left to steal, hide any materials like paint.
I equate it to visiting Yosemite - if you leave ANYTHING visible in your car, even a map or plastic fork the bears think it’s food, bend the window frame, pop the glass, and ravage your seats.
No reason to enter.
Paint OSB black and screw it on the inside of the windows, put a screw in the window tracks, screw a block of wood to the floor in front of every exterior door except ONE for entry, long screws in the door strike plates, remove the knob and install 2 deadbolts.
My go to is SimpliSafe. Cams need wifi but the alarm does not. $129 at Sam’s Club.
I am trying Xparkin solar powered cellular security camera. No wifi, night vision, mic and speaker.
My cop friend says cameras let you watch how they stole your stuff on tape. Can’t get there in time AND you have to be staring at the screen 24/7.

PS
Put up signs because some states have laws about cameras
PLUS I am told "SMILE You're on camera" and dummy cameras are very effective.
I bought the kind with a battery and blinking red light for $9 each on Amazon.
PPS I have my new car stored in a shabby looking but super secure on the inside garage. I don't want to upgrade the exterior to attract attention. Consider this as you secure that home. No shiny new boat in the driveway, install the new front door last...

My SimpliSafe systems have MONITORED service. If an alarm trips and I don't respond they send the police.
I don't want a video recording to watch them carry out my stuff, I want someone with guns and handcuffs to show up.

I don’t worry about having cameras I use two motion sensors that will trigger the alarm. Simply Safe with no contract required stop and start as you need it. --99.23.xxx.x |
