Small tree job (by Ken [NY]) Posted on: Mar 11, 2025 1:59 PM Message:
I have a small tree job at a new property, just cut limbs off the house and across the driveway.I have spoken to 3 guys,1 never showed and 2 showed up,met my guy working there, told him they would call me with a price and never heard from them.I find it kind of amusing but i need to get this done.I am wondering is it too small of a job or maybe they are intimidated by the owner not being there to meet and dealing with my employee?I told them i will require insurance which they all said no problem but maybe they dont have insurance? they knew i wouldnt be there so not like i am hiding anything from them --64.225.xx.x |

Try a lawn care guy instead of a tree guy. Tree guys need to move equipment to a job site for a day or a few days. Lawn care guys are doing spring clean up now and should be able to knock this out for you. --174.249.xx.xxx |

All types of problems getting professionals to show up for a small job. I needed a certified licensed welder to modify a cargo container. I called and made appointments with 11 welding companies. Only one showed up. He was supposed to start the next day a finish then too. He showed up a date late and took 2 days to complete a simple job. So the next time I needed a welder, I just did it myself.
My neighbor cut down branches in his yard from my tree. Now my tree weight was no longer centered over the trunk. I needed someone to balance it out. Called three of my gardeners from rentals. One showed up for a check, then cut the tree but would not haul it away.
My favorite story, an owner of a condo in a 150 unit property asked me for a painter. He was having little luck himself finding a quality painter that charged wholesale prices. I recommended a local painter I used for over 30 years. I told Armondo the painter to do a good job, the owner had more work.
After the painting was over the owner was not happy with the job. So I came to see it and the owner was correct. Surfaces were not smoothed out and there was some over spray. The painter said, "So what, it's only one job"!
So I informed the painter that the client for the condo was actually one of the builders and when they couldn't sell the condo's in a down market, he bought his partners out and converted the building to apartments. He own all 150 units and they all needed painting. He lost the job! --47.155.xx.xx |

It is possible they don't have insurance. I have had them tell me before that they had it and when I went to verify it they did not have it. --73.19.xxx.xx |

A lot of small fly-by-night "contractors" will tell you they have insurance. A lot of the time they mean car insurance and hope you won't check.
Always request that their insurance company send you proof of insurance (and that is actually in force and not cancelled). Sometimes they will get insurance then print out a copy of their paper then cancel the next month. Then when you ask for proof they will show you that paper. Always verify with the insurance company.
As to getting trees cut, I've found that a lot of companies want very high prices. --97.85.x.xx |

I think the guy who dint show might not have had the right insurance, he said he is a concrete contractor but he didnt show up.These are legit tree guys with all the equipment,i would think they would have insurance,it is not that expensive and can make really good money doing trees.I could do it if i had a lift but my balance got messed up so not going to do it and i wouldnt ask my wife to help,if i cant pay to have it done i shouldnt own the house and will sell it. --64.225.xx.x |

Look for somebody that can do it entirely from the ground, using remote control- basically a video game joystick. The company I use is called Cut N Go. They have a minimum charge, about $900 for the last trees I had done. But, they do an amazing job, entirely from the ground. So, their insurance costs are much, much less. The minimum charge is because it is a big machine they have to haul around and set up quickly, and it isn't a cheap piece of equipment.
Cut N Go did one tree at one property, four trees at another, and were done by ten AM. The name, Cut N Go, they took the trees down, stacked the limbs and trunks neatly, and we did the rest. Since I've gotten back into regenerative gardening ( regenerating the soil and microbes in the living soil, ) I use all parts of the trees in my landscapes. If one doesn't want to deal with the logs and limbs, the company can do the whole thing, haul it all away. I have no idea what the costs are for that, but, we ( humans) need to end our aversion to having logs, brush, leaves in our landscapes, if we want to have healthy food and good weather. --72.135.xxx.xx |
