Layoffs up 245% in Feb (by MikeA [TX]) Posted on: Mar 8, 2025 11:06 AM

There were 172,000 layoffs by US employers in February up 245% from January and the highest since July 2020 at the height of Covid. A little less than 1/3 were Federal job cuts at 62,000. That brings the unemployment rate up to 4.1%.

I know it has been getting tougher to fill units and this won't make it any easier. Typically layoffs cause a ripple effect through the economy when the numbers get big enough. Times may get harder before they get better.

Robin - I don't think so because they can't (or shouldn't) be collecting unemployment if they are receiving pay.

Also, I thought (maybe I was wrong) that the Fed jobs were AFTER the date they were going by so they wouldn't be in this report they would be in the next month. I may be wrong in that though.

Just because someone is laid off doesn't mean they are counted as unemployed. It only is counted if they applied for unemployment. Right? I think that's why the unemployment went down after Covid was because when they stopped with the unemployment pay you either received no money at all or got a job (or, as we know some just went to the gov't for "free money") ... but we aren't here for that talk. --67.253.xxx.xxx

The tariffs are going to devastate economy where inflation will reduce demand than people will buy less. Government layoffs will also have effect where more people are unemployed where we headed for severe recession or worse a depression. Why in the world a Elon who has Canadian citizenship need a tax break by laying people to pay for tax break. Applying tariffs on allies where allies will also apply counter tariffs. Absolutely no way we are going to become the 51st state where they will close down all the industries than become Puerto Rico of the north. Housing prices will go down where a depression is deflation. Already trade agreements are in place with the EU and many other countries where trade will increase. If there is not money for a tax break then why in the world tariffs are going to pay tax breaks while the economy goes down hill. Many issues here are going to be resolved where now there is going to be more interprovincial trade within the country along with pipelines for oil and gas to the west and east coast. You cross into a border town where the price of lumber and everything has gone up due to this madness along we will spend money there along with buy products made in Canada as first choice and all contracts will be awarded to Canadian firms or EU firms. If there is way not something is made in Canada then will elsewhere. Every time there is a pause in tariffs this only creates more uncertainty where markets do like that. Economic warfare is not going to work where we are viable country. In the end who is running the country like Elon and the others. If that was a CEO they would show him the door. In my lifetime I never seen offensive hateful talk where everything is complete lies. Bourbon got really hit hard where they took that off shelves where now that is effecting economy. Every so often Porto Rico comes up, but I just don't see anyone marching on the streets asking for Canada to become part of the US.

Where Ontario is an awesome neighbor, we really don't need a bigger family. The US has it's own problems to take care and like any family - we all pick on one another. Some states just make themselves an easier target --174.131.xxx.xxx

What the demand was to reinforce border where all governments did that by spending 1.3 billion along with produced results which a lot of criminals arrested. Less than one per cent comes from Canada in illegal immigration and drugs where illegal guns are brought into Canada the tools of the violent criminals. DJT said the Us has no use for Canada while at the same time wants to remove the border. One gram of illegal drugs is not acceptable. We are family friend of the Us not a enemy like Putin who needs to be stopped. The EU is going to support Ukraine to once and for all bring lasting peace to this war not capitulate to dictator like what happened in Munich in 1938. Tax breaks are going cause debt along money needs to be invested into infrastructure in the Us economy. To cut out government agencies will cause problems. Laying off people will reduce money being spent in the economy. Some of the richest people in the Us give back to the economy. The future is the tariffs need to ended once and for all where we are absolutely not going have one sided tariffs on a free trade deal that DJT negotiated on. On March 16th there is going a announcement of a election where more than likely a Progressive Conservative like in the province of Ontario is going to elected. DJT needs to focus on solving problems in the Us not making things worse. If the billionaires think they should not pay taxes they should move to Russia where Putin would welcome them. Elon Musk is a Canadian citizen where he moved to the Us. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Elon Musk is trying to do what Trump promised he would: identify and stop rampant, growing, over-the-top government waste, fraud and abuse. Line by line.

Promised by many politicians in the past, never before even attempted.

The people who complain the loudest about these ridiculous programs are those who are causing that same waste, fraud and abuse (WFA.) Ordinary people enter Congress and emerge as multi-millionaires, or cling to office so long they have to be carried out kicking and screaming. We know there is corruption right in front of our face but somehow we just expect and accept it. Why?

Robert, I see the 51st State thing as Trump trying to needle Trudeau, get under his skin and humiliate him. Typical Trump - he's a master at the derogatory nicknames. --173.28.xx.xxx

This statement is a lot like the argument about keeping a loan so you get to write-off the interest you pay. So you are going to spend $1 in interest to save a quarter in your tax bill. Not the best financial advice. We are paying for all this bloated, wasted government bureaucracy that is pulling everyone down. The US government is to the point we can hardly make the interest payments on our existing debt and you want us to keep spending at the same rate. That doesn't sound like a good neighbor at all. I'm all for slashing it to the bone. We may suffer some pain in the short term but it will definitely make us stronger in the long term. --209.205.xxx.xx

No, laying off people who are paid by tax dollars will eventually result in the original owner of the tax dollar having it back in THEIR pocket and able to spend it themselves.

Remember the government has ZERO dollars of its own, it gets all its revenue from the taxpayer. So if you don't take as much out of my pocket, I have more to spend on me and mine.

We took in a record total of tax dollars last year - more revenue than any other year ever. Yet our DEBT continues to climb.

This is not sustainable. Our great experiment is going to come to an end if we don't do something. And soon.

Elon is right about that. --173.28.xx.xxx

In a free market economy there needs to be consumer protection to insure products are safe and the transportation is safe. Military contracts for example have to awarded that the price on the contract stays the same where no increases. All government contracts need the same applied that the price does not change. In Canada we moving more then likely to a Progressive Conservative government where they cuts non essential spending along with increase spending on up to the Nato standard to 2 per cent. Canadian Standards Association assures that electrical products and other products are safe. The plane crash that happened in Toronto the Canadian Safety Board is going to go through the black box with the help of the FAA as this plane was from the Us to see what caused the crash. Some province you can buy electrical products not CSA approved where if take a match the wire will ignite. Lincoln electric arc welding equipment exceeds or passes the CSA standard. Where the CSA and UL standard are close. Cutting waste well safety and security is essential. The progressive Conservative will reduce foreign aid while increasing military spending. It also has to looked at how much Canadian content is going into the military. Older military equipment no longer used is sent to Ukraine as that is lower cost option. Auto recalls have reduced unsafe vehicles staying on the road. --216.110.xxx.xxx

We are way beyond basic services like electrical safety. Those services aren't even one drop in an ocean of spending. There are literally billions of dollars going to things like purchasing people new refrigerators, making grants to dead people, and putting illegal immigrants up in luxury hotels. Why? Mostly to line someone's pocket and buy votes. Our Grandkids will still be paying the interest on that stuff generations after those refrigerators have been recycled. It can't continue. Yes feathers are going to get ruffled when you start cutting the leeches off, not everyone is going to like the cuts. But, Elon does know how to do it, he has a proven track record at several of his businesses. Many others have been voted in saying they would make cuts, none until now have been successful so I think you will find that the majority of voters are on board, even knowing there will be some pain.

Also, much of what you are reading and hearing is the war cry of those that are losing the ability to line their pockets with the Government dole. You can bet they are going to scream loud and hard that the world is going to come to an end trying to convince the public that we should stay on the same course that is about to bankrupt us. Just recognize it for what it is and move on. --209.205.xxx.xx

Here government contracts the lowest bidder is never awarded contract as lowest bidder will usually mean problems A elected government does not create policies that cause inflation along with cut essential things like health care, education, pensions and other social programs. As landlord took advise from experts at the landlords association where cancelled all rent appeals then those tenants moved out. I never done things on a whim rather everything was carefully planned. Being hostile to largest trading partners is going partners to trade with other countries along produce more where avoid buying from the Us, travelling to the Us. DJT signed on the free trade deal where now does want to observe. In Canada we produce 2 million vehicles which use parts made in the Us along with import vehicles from the Us and Mexico. To say we are going to close auto industry here is absurd. If oil and electricity is taken out the Us is benefits from free trade. Now Canada is going to look at the Eu and other nations to trade with. People in the Us are disappointed about the inflation along with a government is not going to address problems. There are complete lies which have no truth. Next government is going to pipelines for oil and gas to the coasts so we sell at the world price. Justin Trudeau resigned where after the election a Progressive Conservative comes into power. Again spending will be cut on waste where essential programs will continue along with absolutely no way become the 51st. state. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Elon's "proven track record" includes...

Paying $44,000,000,000 for Twitter at a time when Fidelity estimated it was worth under HALF that. And it is now worth under $10B. So, with the last company he's "proven" himself with, he managed to reduce its value by at LEAST half the day he bought it -- and now it is worth less than a quarter of what he paid. This is not a good "record" to have. Note that when he bought Twitter, he did the same thing that he's doing now: saying that most of the employees were not needed and "dead weight" and did mass layoffs to get rid of them. Turned out a bunch of them actually made Twitter WORK.

So, hopefully, the USA goes better than Musk's last acquisition...

(On a side note, Tesla hasn't been doing good for a while either... His only hope now is that he's able to get the government to bail him out by buying a bunch of "armored Teslas." Once again, Musk "business success" is because the government is subsidizing him. We hate that when they do it with housing, but love it when it is Musk and his cars or space program!) --107.181.xxx.x

I'm pretty sure NE is right. He didn't get to be a worth $400 Billion by being stupid or living off of the government dole.

Musk is thinking longer term than just losing a few billion on twitter. I read two different AI journalists that both came to the same conclusion. Musk bought twitter to be able to feed it's vast library into his AI products. If he is successful they were estimating that would put his his AI company 12-18 months ahead of the competition and would be worth a Trillion dollars, a loss of $24B is peanuts. That doesn't count the non-tangible service he provided society by bringing the corrupt liberal bias that was operating in the shadows at that company.

Even with Tesla's recent loss it's still worth $696 Billion dollars. It was a fledgling startup that was about to go bankrupt when he took the helm and turned it around.

I will take his influence on the government financials over Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren all day long. --209.205.xxx.xx
