No, it's not what you're thinking. I know you're thinking that 6x6 could use some sort of rehab or evaluation, however, I do my own evaluation of myself, thank you very much. Wait, maybe that's the problem.

Anyhow, I have a couple of inquiries that work at a rehab ministries place for drug rehab and mental health. I got to wondering, as I often do, how a rehab facility screens its employees. Wondering if they worry about employees being former drug addicts or perhaps currently using drugs, as they may figure they can rehab them or work with them.

How do you think a rehab facility screens for employees?

Do you think tenant inquiries from such a place of employment would be good or bad?

Thank you for playing,

6x6

It's going to vary a lot. In general, though, a lot of the most effective people in rehab leadership are going to be the people who have struggled with addiction. So they're not talking about abstract "this is how you need to solve it--" but rather, "this is how I solved it for me, and you can solve it for you, too."

You'll want to screen them like normal. Some of them will have it together. Others will have kicked their addiction problem, but have other issues still remaining that are more of a socioeconomic reflection on how their brains are wired, how their priorities are, how they deal with challenges or frustration, etc.

If you're renting a highly desirable place in a highly desirable location, it's not a tier I'd mess with. If you're renting a humble house in a blue collar neighborhood to a factory/fast food kind of clientele, then I would look at the big picture. In general, you want to screen for stability. So if they have a track record for employment, for previous rental history, for lack of criminal history within a certain period--- then I wouldn't ding them just because they had graduated from rehab, or were involved with running rehab. But if they show instability in other parts of their lives, that instability is probably going to manifest in their business with you. So you want them to get further on their feet and make sure they pass your screening criteria, rather than being flexible because you want them to succeed, unless you're comfortable knowing that there's a chance they might fail.

(Not that any of us are ever clear of the possibility of "not-failing", but you understand about past performance being a likely indicator of what kind of person you're doing business with. Someone who's been unstable and now has a track record of stability is always preferable to someone who's been unstable and is looking for stability but hasn't gotten there yet but they're totally certain they would be stable if only they lived in your house.) --137.118.xx.xxx

In most cases, a good portion of the staff are rehabbed addicts. The places I'm aware of actually perform random drug tests for their employees so there is some accountability that they remain sober. --209.205.xxx.xx

You’d be surprised how many addicts turn their lives around in great ways. Some are much more successful than many here will be. --24.152.xxx.xx

Thank you, MikeA and NE.

There is a guy around here that was a drug addict and now owns his on very successful business, so I suppose it does happen. However, after one druggie stole my tools, I can't seem to get that bad taste out of my mouth. --73.19.xxx.xx

Deanna's excellent post is spot on.

Members of my family have had addiction problems and all of them have overcome them, fallen, more than once and gotten back up. Recovery is not a one-and-done stint.

Addiction runs in our family; my grandfather was a pharmacist, my brother was a manager, my sister is a special needs teacher. One of the facilities she did recovery in the staff were all recovered addicts. Very caring, responsible and reliable people with alot of support surrounding them. Another recovery facility she was at was not good in any way, staff included.

Due to family recollections and personal observation, I am mixed; could I be impartial in your position.

Note if they are active outside of work hours; it helps with sobriety. Do they meet your criteria?

Let us know how it turns out.

6er - you are the man.

Perhaps I should be reaching out and seeing if these folks are a source for some contractors that might be hungry for work.

Risky - yes. But I have plenty of work that I can outsource --174.131.xxx.xxx

Oreo, I haven't heard back from them as to when they want to view the house.

Ray, thanks for the suggestion. --73.19.xxx.xx
