This one ended ok, but didn't start well. I scheduled a safety check with a tenant (which is my version of an inspection). During these checks, I change batteries in smoke detectors, battery in CO detector, make sure the fire extinguisher is still charged and change the furnace filter. This tenant let me know the night before he would need new smoke detectors. HUH?? I go out for the inspection and sure enough, all 3 smoke detectors were in pieces. I asked the tenant what happened and learned that he was cooking one night and it started to go off. These are hard wired together, so they were all going off. He pressed the button and they wouldn't shut up. So, he solved the problem by taking them down with a hammer.

I explained to this tenant that the button was a testing button and not a shut up button. Also, they were loud for a reason. I also explained that I would be back to install new ones and he would have to pay for them. He was pretty agitated about having to pay for them. When I went back to install the new ones, he did calm down and ask me how much they were and how to pay for them. Not positive, but I'm pretty sure he called a family member and they advised him that he should pay for it. So, it all ended up being ok. At the end of the day I couldn't help but laugh. Why would you destroy something that wasn't yours and expect someone else to eat the bill for it? This new generation.... haha!

He’d be doing more than getting new smoke alarms if he smashed mine with a hammer. He’s be getting a new place to live. --24.152.xxx.xx

What a mess you got yourself into, dealing with uneducated tenants. This is why my wife hates me, for borrowing her nail polish. I coat my tenants smoke detectors buttons with nail polish for color coding.

One color for testing -- Yellow.

Another Color for the "Hush" feature -- Green

Last and Arrow to show which direction to turn the smoke detector to remove it from its mounting. --66.42.xx.xxx
