I'm looking for a tub surround for my most recent rehab. Holy cow, the prices for a couple of pieces of molded plastic!!
One alternative I've found is interlocking wall planks marketed for shower surrounds. Like LVP for walls. Has anyone tried them? Any ideas of cost-effective alternatives for shower surrounds? At the prices I'm seeing, I'd be better off paying for a tiling job!

Yeap about $1000 now. We've been buying at Menards. Vertical Panels that lock together. Interested in learning more about the interlocking large tile as those seem interesting too. --172.59.xxx.x |

I use the 5-piece glue-up from HD. It used to run $90-$100, but was about $125 when I bought one last month. It's the most popular one with the area landlords, and I see why. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

We use PVC wainscoting as shower surrounds. Works great, customizable, flexible, easy to clean, blah blah blah. Look beachy so works for us, not sure if it's urban enough for some places.
We have put it in multiple places including an added bathroom in our own house. --173.28.xx.xxx |

Ya they’re insane. I bought the cheapest they had for a 60” stall shower and it was almost $500. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Granite slabs, like they use in motels. Approximately 3x5 pieces, one for each end and two for the side, horizontally.
Cultured marble panels...last I checked were around $6-700.

Can't edit--
try looking at
Pro-Series 60 in. W x 57 in. H Five Piece Glue Up Bathtub Surrounds in High Gloss White
online, it says $119.
The official photos are terrible, but the consumer photos in the reviews give a better idea. It's budget and basic, but it's been durable so far. --137.118.xx.xxx |

Yes I have used the cheaper ones. Once I got a set for $10. It's still on the walls and looks amazing. It was a more expensive unit that someone returned. However recently we've been putting in better quality. It's easier to haul. Gives a wow look and it's super easy to clean and In those bathrooms with windows we just go over those after some insulation and preparing the what you may see from the outside. Anyways special order Menards. Click together vertical panels. Super easy to keep clean. No dumb shelfs that hold nothing and break or they get used as safety handles by kids. But the white plastic does work if you want to save $. --172.59.xxx.xx |

When I'm buying a tub surround, I first look at how sturdy the molded soap shelves are. I don't care how good it looks if it seems like the shelf could easily be broken off or cracked. --184.56.xx.xxx |

I started off using the cheap panels, they only lasted about 3-4 years for me before they cracked. Then I used FRP panels, very durable but they look terrible after a couple of years of hard water. I've put in a few of the expensive fiberglass surrounds but in my opinion after doing tile, I won't go back to anything else. It lasts and looks good for decades. Use mid colored grouts to avoid problems with stains. That's all I've used for the last 15 years. --209.205.xxx.xx |

Please explain mid colored grouts.
I have been tiling above the surrounds for years. Had a turn over where my tenants smoked and the grout in the bathroom was yellowed even though I sealed it. I use white tiles so they match everything down the road and help brighten the bathrooms up a bit maybe. --107.147.xx.xx |

Zero, meaning those grouts in the middle of the color range. For example, I try and avoid white, eggshell, avalanche, and the lightest colored grouts because they show stains so badly. I also try and avoid black, chocolate, charcoal, and the darkest colors because they show water spots so badly.
I pick something in the middle of each color, some of my favorites are alabaster, biscuit, and silver. One of these usually works depending on the colors in the tile. My experience is they tend to look better much longer than the lightest or darkest colored grouts. --209.205.xxx.xx |

Thanks Mike, makes sense now.
Typically I put white (some biscuit) tile up. That way I know it will match the paint, cabinets and whatever décor the tenant wants.
Talking about subway type styles. 4x4, 4x6, 4x12, 6x6. More grout lines but less chance of a poor tiler (me) getting the mortar off and causing waves.
