A buddy of mine referred me to somebody who was desperate for a spackler. Now I’m thinking about it, I’m starting to question how much of a buddy he is! Ha ha. I’m getting up this morning at the crack of dawn to go and do some spackling at a small project for Contractor friend, who is a mutual acquaintance through my buddy. Most mornings I spend on the couch under a blanket with my two year-old and four year-old daughter, cuddling and watching Bluey until they’re done and they move on with their day and then I move on with my day. I told my wife this morning that getting up this early to go to work is too much like getting up and going to work! Not used to this kind of stuff. --174.240.xxx.xx |

I did not want to hear her say "mom, who is that guy who is gone when I wake up, gets here late and sits at the desk working until 10 or later every night? A lady tenant began doing handyman work for extra money. She had helped me sometimes a learned how to do the basics. I made sure things were safe when we worked together.
But being a layman, not versed in contracting and how clients "Hide" the truth, she got into trouble. The EPA, Housing and Building and safety gave her a $37,500 fine for working with lead paint. I had to show up and fight City Hall. Since the owner "contracted" with a non-professional, under EPA guide lines, the owner had to have taken and been certified for Lead Safe Practices. --173.205.xxx.xxx |

Yes but definitely not full-time unless you have a bunch.
Last tape/texture job I did was to help out at one of the non-profits I volunteer at. It was two large rooms with 15 ft ceilings that I had to hand texture to match the rest. That job made me feel like an old man. I couldn't hardly move my shoulders the next day I was so stiff. In my younger years that wouldn't have even moved the needle, guess I'm getting old, out of shape, or both. --209.205.xxx.xx |

I finally got it thru everyone's heads that I no longer sell myself out.
I have enough to do on my own places. When I work on someone else's then I am not getting my stuff done.
The hardest was the realtors. Man they paid good, easy jobs only and never more than a couple days in one spot, if that long.
But now it is rare that I have to jump to get onto something.
Kids are gone, I realize all the time I missed with them.

It seems when we go out of town for a visit, invited, time we've taken off of our work to relax and visit, hubby is asked to do something "handy" by the woman of the house. We don't mind a thing or two while there, but after that, there was more, requiring a truckload of power saws, and a day or more of labor. I'm guessing the man of the house wasn't finding the project necessary or something he didn't want to do even tho he is retired.
Neighbors are always asking hubby to do something on their houses. Hubby says, I'll teach you how...then they aren't interested.
We've missed enough of life; now, I'm hoping to take more time with the little ones in our extended family before they grow up. --75.11.xx.xx |

Oreo, I like that answer, “I’ll teach you how.” Reminds me of something that Robert J said on here probably close to 15 years ago. When somebody asks him how to start investing in real estate, he asks them how much cash they have in their wallet, and then tells them to walk over to the toilet and flush it.
