Anyone here familiar with treating iron bacteria using a chlorinated system or any other system,? Have any of you installed the specific system? --174.240.xxx.xxx |

I would be hesitant to begin treating drinking water for tenants. That said, polymers make ugly water pretty…..always keep in mind that iron isn’t harmful to drink and regular flushing will do a lot of good.
I maintain a community water well and system, if I begin treatment of drinking water, the compliance requirements are huge….if I don’t treat, I have much less compliance requirements. --149.76.xxx.x |

If you Google "iron bacteria" there is a bunch of info from Minnesota on this. A quick look gives more info. From what I saw, it needs to be dealt with or potential problems if it's bad. --75.7.xx.xx |

My brother shocks his well 2 times a year and has some kind of a filter thing (looks like a welding bottle) that Culligan comes and changes every couple of month that supposedly filters out most of the iron. Culligan installed it and maintains it. He's happy with it. --209.205.xxx.xx |

I don't know about iron bacteria but I have a rental that I had a terrible time with sediment in the well and a sulfur smell. After a lot of consultations I found a well and septic guy that said I needed an iron spin down filter. That did the trick. No more sediment in the whole house filter and no more sulfur smell. It cost a pretty penny and I manually purge the tank every 3 months. Looks like a 4 foot tall scuba tank. --65.188.xxx.xxx |

Mike A, Ken and Bonanza are describing a water softener. Not cheap to buy, but easy to maintain. --73.2.xx.xx |

Dumnb question-is iron bacteria the same thing was just having iron in your water? --172.59.xx.xxx |

The bacteria is usually the source of the rotten egg smell you sometimes get. It also causes a slimy gooey algae that sticks to everything that stays wet like a dripping bathtub. It can cause issues with plumbing such as clogging up the aerators on the sink. The bacteria feeds off of the iron in the water.
The iron in the water itself isn't bad other than it leaves rust spots. --209.205.xxx.xx |

An iron removal system ran me about $2,200 last year. The bacteria was stronger in the hot water system so I thought if I just drain and swap out the tank that the problem would be solved. That wasn't the case.
I bought this system from my well pump guy. If you don't have one, I can give you his number. He can tell you about the system you need. You are too far away for him to go there - although this time of year he does hunt Bear in between the two of us. --24.101.xxx.xxx |

I did a lot of research into various water softeners for my own home a while back when I got tired of repairing an old Culligan system that came with the house. I finally decided on this recommended system:
amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00YFOTWZG/gtzso-20
There are various brands who sell them, but what I was looking for is the 5600sxt head. That's what matters. And it is nice to have one with the 10% Crosslink Resin (which the one I linked here from AFW Filters has).
I installed it myself without much difficulty -- but remember that we already had a softener, so some of the piping was already there and ready to go. I actually used a pair of these Sharkbite connectors and they made it really easy and have been perfect and leak-free for 5 years:

I installed the system in 2019, but just did some quick searching and that Fleck 5600 SXT still comes highly recommended.
Hope that helps some.
